'Naice' parts of Blackpool/nearby for family group

We are looking at booking a large house for 12 to share ranging from grandparents in their 60s to a 1 year old baby.

We usually go to Northumberland but have been considering exploring the NW of England which we don't know particularly well.

Any suggestions? Beach access is a necessity, either a seaside town or a short drive. My parents are keen on Blackpool as they think the older kids will love it but I'm not sure. My sister has been and said it was a bit noisy/scruffy...

Thanks!

It's fact, not snobbery

8/10 of the most deprived areas in the entire country are in .......Blackpool

I did stay there once for a week and it was utterly grim. I've never had such an appalling time. Admittedly, it was also the other tourists who made it so awful so it's not just the local druggies, but also the stag/hen/other tourists in general. If you like drinking and fighting and then doing a shit in the swimming pool, it's great though.

Stay at Ribby Hall, it’s really nice there and near to Blackpool.

Tulipan are you aware there are places outside the centre of Blackpool ? The zoo, the miniature village, the park (( forget the name but it's a large and rather lovely park )) farmer parrs farm / museum even the bleddy sandcastle are away from the main strip and all lovely places to visit.

For what it's worth I was in Chester last week, historical city full of Tudor buildings and all that bosh. A guy (( probably carrying drugs tbh )) was taken down by police at the train station and we were all very amused by these signs that were put up around the park. Kindly asking people not to shit or take drugs in public.

In Chester of all places 😳

Yes, all those places are ok and can be visited in a day (if you love model villages and don't have a zoo nearby). I just suggested staying either up or down the coast, and the nearest I would stay is Lytham St Annes. Ribby is a good suggestion. To be honest, there are loads of nice places up and down the coast. Why bother with the shithole that is Blackpool at all? (Maybe a quick visit to the main strip?)

Grew up there. Either North or Lytham.

Thanks for the further replies.

'Naice' is used tongue-in-cheek on MN! I thought that was clear but perhaps not.

Totally get naice. I grew up there as I say. There are really grotty bits but you lot should have seen how grotty those bits were in the 70s and 80s!

I love Blackpool. I last went years ago on a hen weekend and it was awful. Tenatively went on a family holiday there a few years ago and loved it. My son loves the beach, the piers, the fish and chips, the big park, the dinosaur museum, the freshly made donuts, the zoo....to mention a few things. There are loads of things to do for everyone and I've never met anyone unfriendly there.
We are going to go back to go up the tower amongst other things. Hope you have a good time there!

It diesnt help whe you say 'We're not at all snobbish, and I think the naff-ness appeals to my parents,' We know we have problems but being seen as a novelty factor doesnt help!

AnnDaloozier · 27/02/2020 19:51

I took my teens for the day. That was enough. Endless smoking. God I’ve never seen so much smoking.
Dilapidated houses. Awful. It’s really sad.

gladysinthepicture · 28/02/2020 21:34

put it this way OP Yarmouth is positively classy compared to Blackpool!

It REALLY is that bad. Even Skegness is better lol!

sandgrown · 29/02/2020 07:23

As I said previously. Stay just outside and come in for the day with an open mind . I think you may be surprised by the improvements that have been made to the promenade. Please report back if you decide to risk it!

happytoday73 · 29/02/2020 18:22

Southport or Lytham St Anne's would be my choice for things to do for all ages

FoamingAtTheUterus · 29/02/2020 18:27

happy I take it you haven't been to Southport for a while ??

I got a shock last week, we hadn't been for a few years and it was really sad to see what it's like now. :/

SambaMamba · 29/02/2020 18:28

Lol at fresh ... doughnuts

We live near Liverpool so Blackpool and North Wales are both just over an hour away.
We are often in north Wales but rarely Blackpool, its fine for a day out once a year usually to see the lights. It's a shame it's just gone so down hill.
North Wales has far more to offer if you want Fish, Chips and Bingo it has it but also has more relaxing places, plenty to see and do summer or winter.
Lots of ideas here
