Is Filey nice for holidays?

Or is it a bit rubbish? Would whitby be better?

Whitby's lovely. It has a good sandy beach and I think it’s the most picturesque and photogenic resort on the Yorkshire coast, but it's an old fishing port with steep inclines and most of the houses have no parking so it may be better to stay elsewhere and perhaps have a day trip there.
Filey has a beautiful beach between Filey Brig and Flamborough head. It is the least developed of the Yorkshire coast resorts with only one amusement arcade on the seafront and a few children’s rides. Many visitors think Filey is a more classy resort because of this. There are lovely gardens on the cliff top and you can walk out along the Brig.

It depends what sort of holiday you want - if you've got young kids and want a traditional bucket and spade beach holiday (weather dependent!!) Filey is perfect. Whitby is lovely too, also has nice beaches (esp. Sandsend) and the town is a bit more interesting than Filey, also you're very close to the North Yorkshire Moors.

Scarborough every time.

delilabell · 21/02/2020 19:58

Ooh Thanks everyone. Years ago we were told Scarborough wasn't very nice... Has it improved? We've got a 7 and a 3 year old. 7 year old has additional needs so needs somewhere not too crowded and loud (eg he couldn't cope with Weeton suoernare because of all the noise) but he also has adhd type tendancies so we need things to do.

The good thing about that bit of the world is you can just drive to which ever bit suits you best it's all quite close together. Personally for bit of peace and quiet I would go for Robin Hoods Bay or Filey and just visit Whitby, Scarborough Bridlington at quiet times and in small doses for your childs needs.

EwwSprouts · 22/02/2020 19:10

Scarborough north bay is quiet with Peasholm Park but south bay has amusement arcades. You can walk the lengthy promenade between the two.
Filey is much quieter but the beach is lovely, rock pools along the brigg & crazy golf on the front.
Whitby would be your worst choice as gets really busy and hard to retreat on the narrow rammed streets, though out of season it's fab.

Filey has a really lovely beach, and it’s so much quieter than Scarborough! We stayed for a week in the summer holidays last year & the kids loved it. From there we visited Robin Hoods Bay, Dalby Forest, Scarborough, Goathland but their favourite days were on Filey beach!

GreyishDays · 06/03/2020 15:20

Filey is nice! More so than Scarborough IMO.

timeforawine · 06/03/2020 15:23

Scarborough gets very busy! I would stay either Whitby or Filey and visit Scarborough. North bay is quieter and nicer, there is a lovely pub and a sea life centre. No arcades etc on that side

I stayed here recently, really lovely and quiet with loads of space for the kids (and a pool too!) a bit of a drive to Filey though lowcostamill.co.uk/?gclid=Cj0KCQiAhojzBRC3ARIsAGtNtHXOcXj0gDN9oBRqRRiCHJykYTNZV5JoVgVJgn-ONJNmtZ7SPZhkaRUaAmFQEALw_wcB

PaulaSmith1 · 03/06/2020 10:18

We thought Filey was really nice - quiet and well kept.

YummyVeggie · 03/06/2020 10:37

I agree Pickering is lovely, I stay there for a week every year and have done since I was 9 months old

Honeyroar · 09/06/2020 09:12

We went to Filey when my stepson was 8. He loved it. The rock pools were lovely, as was the beach. It was peaceful too. We had days out to Whitby and Scarborough (and another seaside town nearby) which were nice, but much busier. Whitby is quaint and the beach is spacious, but the streets are narrow and busy, so might be difficult to manoeuvre if your son doesn’t like it.

fantasmasgoria1 · 09/06/2020 09:17

Whitby is so beautiful. There is plenty to do and it's picturesque. Scarborough is OK i guess but not a patch on whitby!

WhiteVixen · 09/06/2020 09:27

Filey is great. We’ve been the last three years in a row. First two years in a caravan at Primrose Valley, last year we found a house on Airbnb in Filey itself. Huge sandy beach, plenty of space to spread out. But you have to watch the tide times as the sea comes right up to the wall at high tide so the beach disappears. I think if you go down the beach towards the Primrose Valley end it doesn’t come up quite so high. But it’s a lovely little town with some nice coffee shops.

Jlou0712 · 09/06/2020 19:27

I am looking to book The Bay in Filey and use it as a base as lots near by. Think any of the towns would be good if ur plannimg visiting around the area 😊

Honeyroar · 09/06/2020 20:40

The other busier seaside town I mentioned that was busier was Bridlington. Just remembered!

Astillbe · 12/06/2020 12:44

@Jlou0712

We rented a house at The Bay in Filey a few years ago with our then 7 and 2 year old dds. We had a house with a big back garden, only a 2 minute walk from the pool and 5 min walk to the beach.

Filey itself isn't very big but has a lovely beach. We visited a lot of places within a shortish drive, Sewerby Hall, Nunnington Hall and Yorkshire Wildlife Park were great. Whitby is lovely but can get very busy.

Jlou0712 · 12/06/2020 12:56

@Astillbe

Did you enjoy the bay?

I am now looking at reighton sands had talked myself out a caravan however you can get seaview ones and park has good reviews...

Astillbe · 12/06/2020 14:15

@Jlou0712

We always stay in cottages / villas so The Bay was perfect for us. We just used it as a base but it was handy having a pool on site, I think there was also a pub and shop. There's a path down to the beach which you can walk along into Filey.

WakyWally · 29/08/2024 21:35

Filey is perfect for young children. Stunning beach and good amenities. A few rides etc. Plenty of food kiosks.
