Cornwall at Easter - where?

I started a thread a few months ago about where to go in Cornwall that might have a similar 'vibe' and feel to St Agnes which we really liked last year.

A few people mentioned Portleven which I have looked into but I have read that the beach /sea can be dangerous so now wondering if that's a good option with young children...?

Can anyone suggest any other villages / beaches to look at? Criteria are:

  • Not really busy / built up (e.g. not Newquay or Perranporth)
  • Nice beach with swimming / paddling for children
  • A few cafes / a pub (not bothered about lots of shops etc)
  • Ideally an arty / laid back vibe or traditional village rather than a resort
  • Good coastal walking close by

Does anyone have any tips? I've also looked at Padstow which looks nice but there's not much accommodation available and I wonder if the surrounding area is nice or not and if travel will be difficult as it's Easter so likely to be busy.

Thanks

Portreath is nice. Right by the beach and lots of walks nearby.

I was just going to say Portreath too.

We hired a cottage in Marazion (St Michael's Mount) at Easter a few years ago and it was lovely.
Padstow is nice to visit but I don't think I'd stay there with young children - it's normally very busy.
DH and I stayed in Boscastle for a few days which is gorgeous but not much for children to do.

We've also stayed in Bude (Sandymouth Park) which was surprisingly OK - a very small caravan park - kids loved it there.

We always stay in the SE bit of Cornwall around Looe, Fowey etc. When the children were smaller we stayed HERE might be worth looking at as they have farm animals and a kids play barn which mine really enjoyed. Agree with you about Newquay - we didnt enjoy it or Padstow. I have always found this bit of Cornwall a bit quieter and more laid back. lovely beach at Seaton rather than Looe.

We once stayed at Polperro in a small holiday park type place with an indoor pool, which was great for the children. We went in the summer but it was still too cold to swim in the sea!

Portreath, Porthtowan or Marazion would be good options. Portreath and Porthtowan are next beaches down the coast from St Agnes.

Looe is a harbour town divided into two parts either side of the arched stone bridge across the river. East Looe is the main tourism centre - narrow streets lined with shops, cafes and pubs that lead through to the main town beach. West Looe is a good beach for exploring with lots of rock pools and a good view across to St George's, or Looe Island. There are boat trips to the island in the summer season, as well as along the coast. A train journey on the Looe Valley Line will take you to the ancient stone circle at Duloe and the holy well at St Keyne.

Sennen Cove has lovely white sand, quaint cottages, and a spectacular coastal walk to Land's End. The village also has a small harbour, a few art galleries and gift shops and some great places to eat and drink.

Bude
Its out of the way and like stepping back in time, nice beaches outdoor swimming pool on the beach! Coastal walks, only thing missing is its not rammed with tourists just nice.
Nearest Mcdonalds is 50 miles away!
Stayed here

Its a B&B but we rented the whole house sleeps 6 and the owners move out, 5 min walk from the beach 10 mins to the town, Bude is a nice place you will love it.
Now if you fancy something different and like making stuff we went here its not cheap but nice people and very enjoyable

Have a look at The Roseland Peninsula.

St Mawes is kinda arty and a boat ride away from Falmouth.
Lots of unresorty beaches and wonderful coast path walking.
It’s on the south coast and much safer for children beach/surf wise.
Lots of villages with pubs and cafes.

Bit of a trek, and will require a car while there.

TBH I think St Agnes is one of a kind, I don’t think you’ll find anything quite like it even in Cornwall.
It prides itself on that!

Jojoanna · 23/02/2020 08:37

I would also say Bude. Stayed many times , lovely beaches especially further up by Widemouth bay . Lots to do for children

Yumsnet · 23/02/2020 08:45

Rock has most of those things but can be £££, especially if you’re nearer the sea. But it’s lovely (IMO) and close to Daymer Bay, Padstow & Polzeath.

FernFurze · 23/02/2020 08:49

I hate Padstow, which feels like some stagy Rick Stein theme park when busy, and don’t know St Agnes. What about St Ives? It’s bigger than what you’re after, but there’s the Tate, Barbara Hepworth’s house and garden, Bernard Leach, lots of artists (I took a life-drawing class when I was last there on holiday), lovely beaches right in town for young children, good places to eat, and the coastal path running right through.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 23/02/2020 08:53

Bude does tick boxes.

Two fab sandy beaches. Good shops in town. Sainsburys is 5 mins walk from the beach. It’s close to main roads so easy to travel around. Lots of Airbnb around, or B&B. There’s a premier inn in the town.

Coverack? Kid friendly beach, small town, great pub, great chippy, (not sure about cafes), on the Lizard peninsula which has lots of other lovely beaches and good walks.

Portscatho on the Roseland is also a lovely small town with great facilities and the beaches around there are gorgeous.

Toria70 · 02/03/2020 13:22

We love Rock, the beach there is amazing and you can walk for miles. And easily get the ferry over to Padstow.
