Cornwall Motorway or normal roads...

Morning so I am travelling to Falmouth in Cornwall in April.. I passed my driving test last week so I plan on driving down will be me, my mom and my 2 LOs who are 5 and 3..

I do plan on having a couple of motorway lessons before hand and will obviously stop off a few times on the way BUT on looking I have noticed you can get there without going on the motorway but it takes around 2 hours longer..

Has anyone ever done this? I will be driving from Birmingham and we will be leaving very early on a saturday morning like 5am... xxx

I'd definitely stick to the motorway if you feel able to after your lessons. Going on the alternative roads will include more traffic lights, roundabouts, junctions etc and will tire you out more on what is already a long drive.

You’ll be mainly on a42/m42 then m5 which will be fine at that time and then a30 From Exeter anyway. It’s a good introduction to motorways, just go for it I say! Stay in the left lane if you feel nervous and only overtake when you feel ready.

Motorways are a lot safer than the tiny Cornwall roads. Take your time know your route and set off early.

It would be a lot more tiring to not take the motorway. From Birmingham it’s Avery easy drive down the M5 then at Exeter it’s dual carriageway anyway nearly all the way. What surprises most people is that it’s 1 and a half hours from Exeter on the A30 before it’s small roads for 45mins to Falmouth. Cornwall is a loon country.

Long not loon🤣

I'd take the motorway, that is m5 all the way to Exeter, where it turns into a duel carriageway, so apart from the bit at Bristol where you need to be in the right 2 lanes there is no major junctions and you could stay in the left lane all the way if you wanted.

Thankyou everyone that's abit more reassuring.. I thought earlier i set off the better as motorway/roads will be less busy and then stop off at service stations ect il do a couple of lessons on motorway and then do a little practice to somewhere local on them before hand

Thankyou xxx

I would do the motorway. The A38 is very stop start through small towns.

Are you travelling on a weekday? It may be worth checking timings so you dont hit the rush hour coming past Exeter. The M5 can get pretty busy.

Also there are ongoing roadworks on the A30 just past Exeter which are slow so factor that into your timings as well.

Once you try it, motorways are really easy (boring but easy).

Get plenty of motorway practice, but in future when you go directly to a place you miss so much on the way, but for this holiday I would take the motorway. This website shows common destinations in North Wales etc but by more interesting routes
