I've lived outside the UK for a long while and am a bit clueless about some aspects of the rail system, so I'm hoping someone can give me some help.

If I want to travel from Edinburgh airport to Oban as cheaply as possible, what's the best way to go about it? Do I need separate tickets for separate legs of the journey? Can I book online in advance and collect from machines at the stations with a credit card?

Thanks so much in advance to anyone willing to answer my boring question!

I think you would have to get the tram (or bus) from the airport to a train station. There is no train station at the airport itself although the tram should be no hassle. There should be a train to oban from glasgow queen street. You can book online and it gives a code to let you collect tickets at the station.

I think you take a bus (coach)

You'd be looking at getting the bus or tram from the airport to Haymarket station. These are every 15 mins or so.

You'd then get the train from Haymarket to Glasgow Queen Street which takes around 30 mins.

From there you'd switch onto the train to Oban which is about 3 hours.

You can buy an advance ticket for the whole journey from Haymarket to Oban from www.thetrainline.com or the National Rail website and collect your ticket from the station.

Yes you can buy online and collect tickets at the station, not sure but there used to be a certain window when tickets were cheap, you will have to Google that as it's been a while for me, here is a link that might be helpful

You'll need to take the tram from the airport to Edinburgh Waverley. Then get on trains to Glasgow then Oban, you can book the trains on Trainline.com for ease. Tram from the airport just pay on the day as you get on.

Look at thetrainline.com..... or type it into google.... (or get the bus from the airport to Glasgow) and then the train from Queen Street.

There is no train from Edinburgh to Oban so you have to travel from Glasgow.

There is a Citylink from Edinburgh Airport to Glasgow Bus Station and Glasgow Queen Street Station is only a short walk away from there so you can get a train on to Oban. The bus is £13.00 and train is around £11.00 to oban Single, after 10am on a weekday.

Or, get a bus or tram from Edinburgh Airport to the City (Haymarket) (no idea price) and from there you can either get a train to Queen Street and then to Oban (£16ish single, after 11am on a weekday) or you can go into Edinburgh Bus Station and get a bus to Glasgow and then train to Oban.

If you got the Citylink coach from Edinburgh Airport to Oban (1 changeover) after 11am on a weekday it would be £34.80 Single.

The trick is to travel after peak to save money and to compare the bus V train options.

Enjoy your trip!

Rome to Rio is a good app for these types of journeys.

There is a website that's called traveline Scotland which shows you routes and timetables if you know the day and time you'd like to travel.

Thanks so much everyone.
