Requirements. Nice cottage, rural ish or coastal ish. Not city. Somethings around and about to see and can travel as will have car. Not Edinburgh or Glasgow. Any suggestions? We like nice walks, castles, museums, zoo, wildlife things and good pubs with nice food. Can anyone recommend anywhere to start to look please? 2 teens. 2 adults. Smile thanks!

North Berwick or Dunbar Smile

Highland Wildlife park is amazing . Look on air B&B for a whole house /cottage. Much cheaper than an agency..

Timeandtune · 29/01/2020 19:48

Stirling area might be good for you

TitianaTitsling · 29/01/2020 19:50

Dumfries and Galloway? Have a look at the FB group 'scotland by the roadside' for inspiration!

TallulahMazda · 29/01/2020 19:51

Timeandtune, that looks gorgeous just up my street thank you

Borders - very underrated, IMO - lovely countryside, lots of stately homes, abbeys and castles, outdoorsy stuff like Glentress if that's your thing, and Edinburgh a short journey away if you want a day trip.

We had one of our favourite holidays at Kilconquhar Castle. You can rent a room in the castle or one of the newer lodges in the grounds. Pool, kids activities, gym and a restaurant.
Lovely setting & near to coast.

Forrest holidays at Strathyre is a lovely base. You can cycle into Callander or Strathyre and loads to do in the area.

Malteserdiet · 29/01/2020 19:58

Lossiemouth/Roseisle area in the Highlands. Stunning beaches and walks, beautiful forests, Inverness an hour away. Aviemore and all the activities there about an hour south and Landmark adventure park for the teens.

MrsW85 · 29/01/2020 19:59

We love the south west coast. Castle douglas and kirkcudbright in particular.

eyeoresancerre · 29/01/2020 20:05

Aybone near Balmoral is a sweet town. You can go to the castle, go to the Dee River - it's really good place to explore.
Kyle of Lochalash - next to Skye. Has Skye to visit and castles, lochs etc.

Stirling or surrounds. It’s not a great distance from there to Loch Lomond, Stirling castle and Edinburgh castle, blackness castle (where outlander was filmed amongst other venues, one of which is Doune castle near to Stirling, the one where monty python filmed the Holy Grail).
Blairdrummond safari park and Edinburgh zoo. International rugby in Edinburgh, easy commute also to Aberfoyle or Perth.

It’s basically central so you can go and sightsee the whole central belt of Scotland.

I’d love to go up north as the scenery is amazing. The sea is like the Caribbean but it’s cold! And teens may be a bit bored! There are lots of central belt islands to day trip to on the west of Scotland. Many need booked months in advance though as they get mobbed during the tourist season and I can understand why as the islands are great.

You could always plan a trip around spending a night or two at each venue, stay overnight on an island like Arran which isnt too far away just to see what it’s like. I love Millport on the Isle of Cumbrae. (You don’t need to book the ferry) Tiny place but hardly any cars, hire bikes and cycle round it, crap if the weathers crap though! Fab if it’s hot. Sandy beach. The usual! Google when festivals (eg country and western festival in Millport) or Highland games (all over scotland) are on if you like them.

Either east Neuk of Fife (Elie, Crail etc). Close to St Andrews, or the Spey Valley (either boat of Garten or Nethybridge).
Scotland at its best.

FairfaxAikman · 29/01/2020 20:17

East Neuk of Fife for coastal or Kenmore/Killin/Aberfeldy for rural.

boredorboard · 29/01/2020 22:04

I can recommend the Highland Club at Fort Augustus at the southern end of Loch Ness. Swimming pool, tennis, table tennis, archery and other activities on site. Loads of places to visit nearby Glenfinian, Eileen Donan, Castle Urqhuart, Loch Neas monster!

SushiGo · 29/01/2020 22:13

Trossachs national park/loch lomond is gorgeous and lots to go out and do within short drives from rural villages.

Fififofum81 · 29/01/2020 22:23

Isle of Arran is great, loads to do for all ages, easily enough to fill a week. Hamilton Cottages are nice, good garden for kids to run about etc.

Belindabelle · 30/01/2020 00:46

As Pitmilly was floating your boat check out Cambo. Also look for holiday lets in Kingsbarns, Crail, and Elie

TallulahMazda · 30/01/2020 06:55
