We're looking for somewhere to holiday in the first week of August. Must be then due to work holidays.

We were looking at the Cornwall area but have been advised by frequent visitors to the area that it may not be suitable or entertaining enough for our son who will be 4.

Does anyone have any hidden UK gems they wouldn't mind sharing?

Not sure why on earth Cornwall wouldn't be suitable for a four year old!

For UK holidays we love Cornwall, Northumberland, Anglesey and Carmarthenshire.

The distance between attractions was the main point they were making. We'd be spending a lot of time travelling by car to get between places. I guess having lots close by would be more ideal.

What about Swanage? Lovely sandy beach, lots to do in the area, and not as busy as Cornwall. Our DC loved getting the train to Corfe Castle. We also went on a boat trip to Poole.

They’re not ‘hidden’ gems, but we like Norfolk, the Yorkshire coast (Scarborough, Filey, Whitby) and the Isle of Wight.

We like North Wales, lots of stuff is close by, we do like Cornwall but its just rammed in the summer. I don't think a 4 year old will care where he is as long as he has fun.

If you stay in southern Cornwall near the lizard then flambards, the seal sanctuary, lands end and st Michael’s mount are all within easy reach. The beaches there too are spectacular.

We stayed in mullian when our girls were 4 and 18 months and had a great holiday.

Cornwall is great for 4 year olds. The hardest bit is getting down there, because it’s always a bit further than you think.

Isle of Wight is good. Lots of activities , beaches etc, and kids love the ferry ride across.

A hidden gem would be Isle of Man. Beautiful place. Lots to see and do.

We have stayed in many places along the north coast of Cornwall and Devon since kids were small (now teens). If you want something with lots near by and on-site then I would recommend Devon cliffs Haven but don’t go for the basic accommodation (upgrade), they have a beach on site, several pools, kids clubs, places to eat and lots of activities.

We also stay near Bude quite a lot as it’s near many other places, the town is nice, beaches are great but not for swimming (north coast is for surfing, south coast for swimming).
