Is anywhere affordable?

We have a tent so
Could camp but it wears me out
And the children are at a particularly difficult
Stage.
So i have been looking at hostels or dorm accommodation in holiday centres and they are all so expensive averaging 100 a night.
Separately I have been looking at term
Time retreat centres for me and - again -
Quite basic accommodation is still quite pricey.
Any suggestions welcome

House swap?

KenDodd · 11/01/2020 23:04

If you're brave and like people you could try this?

Field centres can have good cheap rates.

KenDodd · 11/01/2020 23:05

What about a newspaper £10 holiday? Do they work?

KenDodd · 11/01/2020 23:06

Is staying in a Travel Lodge/Premier Inn cheaper?

Doryhunky · 11/01/2020 23:11

I think some travel lodges work out the same price as family rooms in hostels so
Worth considering. Can’t house swap
At the moment because we have a lodger. Will look for field centres.

www.yha.org.uk

We had most of our family holidays in them when I was growing up. Most have dormitories and family rooms. Some are in really amazing locations too.

clary · 11/01/2020 23:14

depends when and where and how many DC but SC accommodation in uk can be cheaper than £100 a night. For example a quick search has found lots of nice flats in Pembrokeshire (lovely family area) for £3-400 for two beds for a week.

MyDcAreMarvel · 11/01/2020 23:16

Premier inn £29 a night rooms or hoseaons if you read the reviews on trip advisor and choose carefully there are some nice sites.

Doryhunky · 11/01/2020 23:20

Yes, self catering is also a possibility. Yha family rooms are just too expensive for what they offer. I had great family hols in affordable dorms as a
Child but these days I would have to book
A family room which isn’t affordable.

Caravans are cheap. We went to Scotland for 5 days in May half term for £179.

SquashedFlyBiscuit · 11/01/2020 23:35

Caravan parks. Haven etc can get you a good location and space to use as a base to explore an area. We've also used a premier inn for a week but it really adds up when you cant self cater a bit.

vilamoura2003 · 11/01/2020 23:38

We have rented cottages from cottages4you (or whatever they are now called), you can get a cottage for £400 for the week, less than £100 per night. If you have tesco vouchers you can also exchange them on the club card scheme for an extra £100 off 👍

ExpletiveDelighted · 11/01/2020 23:44

The Sun holidays for £9.50 are on at the moment.

insideoutandback · 11/01/2020 23:44

Try Independent Hostel Guide, a lot of the independant hostels are cheaper than YHA, Or Google Field Centres. Depends what your looking for.
If you message me I might be able to help 👍🏻

What is your family size?
Tied to school holidays or not?
Where in the country are you and where to you want to travel to?
Do you have a car or do you need public transport to get there/get around?

FellWanderer · 12/01/2020 10:30

Yha is cheap if you book at the last minute. Their prices vary massively so if possible book with them with a couple of days notice. If not look at camping pods for an easier version of camping.

KoalasandRabbit · 12/01/2020 11:04

We just stayed in Holiday Inn Express in Bath for £52.50 a night for 4 people including full English breakfast. Car parking was £7.50 a night if need that. Booked via Booking.com. Does vary by dates / offers at times.

Doryhunky · 12/01/2020 21:18

Sorry, we are three, tied to school hols, and have a car!

Just booked 3x sun holidays for this year today. Although as you need school hols there is probably only pontins left, depends how fussy you are, but can work out v cheap.
I can’t wait (we have booked some lovely parks)

absolutezero0k · 12/01/2020 21:20

Sun £9.50 holidays - there's a group on Facebook which has all the details and codes.

Funf · 13/01/2020 17:03

We have spent a few nights at the side of the road, pub carparks etc with our camper vans. Many pubs will let you as long as you buy a beer or two.
But only do able if you have a camper van.
How about helping out on a camp site in exchange for a free pitch?
Just ask on here you never know
