Holiday destinaton for big birthday with small child and disabled pensioner

Trying to sort out a family holiday in August and stuck for where to go. Would be 2 adults in 30s, a 4 year old and 2 pensioners, one of whom has very limited mobility but doesn't/ won't use a wheelchair or motorised vehicle. We'd have use of a car to drive to places but ideally not places hours away. Most will be getting to the location by train. We are currently in Midlands, North and Scotland. Not the Lake District, which I know is the logical option. Not spa type breaks. Self catering is ok. We like seaside places but some hard hard to get round / park at that time of year. Typing this out I feel I am looking for the impossible.

If anyone knows of a destination abroad that fits the bill that would be considered too but would be without a car. Somewhere with a good tram network to just get on / off outside galleries etc.

What about a cruise? We did this one year to accommodate elderly MIL. The dc loved the pools and games. We did a couple of 1/2 day trips - one we left MIL on boat and another time I stayed on boat with dc. A cruise isn’t my idea of an ideal holiday but it worked well for the ages/requirements of group.

Isle of Man? Very easy to get around on public transport and some interesting historic trains / a horse drawn tram in Douglas. The beaches are good as well.

Yorkshire, The Bay at Filey is lovely and accessible with day trips to York, Scarborough, lavender farm, Castle Howard etc.

Malaga, flat, small city and easy to do on foot/taxi.

Alcudia (no museums) and Palma are all flat and accessible.

Albuferia in Portugal is lovely but beach holiday.

Scout2016 · 05/01/2020 16:06

Gosh, you mumsnetters are wonderful. Will look into all of these. We did do York a few years ago but only some of us and before 4 year old, so might be worth revisiting. @CostcoFan can I ask what sort of cruise, and who with?

What about north/west Wales? Lots of nice coastal places there which I think are mostly pretty flat (& there’s a train up Snowdon!)

Does the limited mobility person have a blue badge? If not could they get one? That would make your life a lot easier.

Seville. Perfect location.

m00rfarm · 05/01/2020 16:10

Ignore what people say about it bring too hot in August. Everywhere is air conditioned and outside they cover the roads with shades and spray water. It feels much hotter in the algarve where I live. You can get somewhere with a pool as well. Make sure you’re in the Santa Cruz alfalfa area.

Scout2016 · 05/01/2020 16:12

We do have a blue badge yes. And sometimes they will accept using one of those fold up wheelchairs but they are actually awful to push round, can't cope with any cracks or curbs. Thank you everyone.

@m00rfarm that's a helpful tip about the heat as we all struggle when it's too hot.

We went with Royal Caribbean and did a Mediterranean cruise. Our youngest was 4/5 but the others were older, so wanted a big ship with more activities for them. The youngest one would have been happy with a simpler ship with just nice pools I think.

In the UK Tenby is great - my mum is disabled and we had a great time - we stayed on the esplanade and it was relatively flat for her to get around.

Abroad we have stayed with her in Gran Canaria and Tenerife but her favourite was the Barcelo Thallsso (?) in Costa Caleta Fuerteventura. It was perfect for us all (DS was 5 and 7)

TheABC · 05/01/2020 16:31

Are you tied to the school holidays? If not, you could book a break for half the price.

For something a little different, consider taking the ferry (or flying from Scotland) to the Netherlands. Eurocamps have some lovely, accessible chalet options or you could book a city break with a pool.

alphajuliet123 · 05/01/2020 16:39

What about driving over to Ireland? That way you get to explore a new country but still have the car. It's on my to-do list!

Failing that we had a great north Wales holiday last summer - absolutely loads to do. I'd highly recommend the Caernarfon area so you can go to Port Meirion which is lovely and unique, and the beach at Abersoch which was just lovely.

Sirzy · 05/01/2020 16:41

We cruise with P and O and they are fantastic both with children and people with disabilities. My disabled Ds loves it

Scout2016 · 05/01/2020 16:48

@TheABC we aren't, it's just the birthday is then. @alphajuliet123 I wanted Galway but they weren't keen! I love Ireland. Thank you @CostcoFan

@Pieceofpurplesky interesting about Tenby. Went as a kid and remembered it as hilly, will put it on the list.

OP posts:
Pieceofpurplesky · 07/01/2020 12:55

It is hilly in parts but if you are at the top everywhere is flat - my mum can manage the hills on her walker/pusher thingy down to the beach.

North Wales, compact, plenty to see and do, most places are accessible.
Llandudno is a good base with stuff going on and about 60-90 minutes to Chester, Liverpool etc if you fancy a change, plenty of Hotels, Caravan parks and Cottages locally.
The Llyn Peninsular is spectacular
