Wales

We fancy Wales this year. I like the idea of a cottage near St David's. My DD6 wants a holiday park. She thinks cottages are boring.

Any recommendations - either a cottage in a naice seaside town to make it less bore to DD6, cottage with pool, or a holiday park.

Thanks

We're just back from Scolton Country Cottages and it was great. Very quiet and rural but central for all areas of Pembrokeshire. Has it's own small play area on site plus Scolton Country Park with a big playground next door. Very nice indoor pool. We went to the Blue Lagoon at Bluestone as day visitors as the DC love the pool there. We've camped near St Davids but nor stayed in a cottage there. It is a lovely area.

Thanks. Will bookmark the don't hibernate blog. Will also discuss Scolton with DH, it might be a possibility.

If our aim is not to travel too far, then I'm not sure Pembrokeshire is the best place to go - there is no "good" road (motorway or clear duel carriageway) north to South.
If you want to go somewhere other than beautiful North Wales (Anglesey?) what about The Wirral? Not often recommended as a holiday destination but some lovely sandy beaches and an easy journey into Liverpool which is a lovely City, if you don't get great beach weather.

We discovered Abderdovey & Barmouth for the first time last year & completely fell in love with them. It was my first year as a single parent so needed a cheap holiday not overly far from home (live in the Midlands). We camped at a lovely little site in between Dolgellau & Machynlleth and travelled out everyday.

It was fabulous, wish we’d gone years ago!

I love Aberdyfi. We stayed in a beautiful scenic cottage with amazing views over estuary near Aberdyfi about two years ago. My daughter complained it was boring. Too idyllic for her. Never stayed in Barmouth but done day trips.

Have a look if there's any in Mumbles. It's beautiful!

Pembrokeshire- can second the recommendation for Clydey cottages but expensive!

St David’s, Newport, porthgain, all lovely but no recommendations of places to stay.

I also love Ceredigion coast, poppitt, cardigan etc, and new quay and Aberaeron.

Under the thatch is a great website for cottages and glamping.

When DD was 18 months we had a holiday at Fron Fawr. They are same ownership at Clydey. We used the facilities, and did the animal feeding. It was lovely but I felt like the poor relations coming in for the day.

Our favourite holiday for animal feeding was Cwmiar. We also loved Torridge House Cottages in Devon that had animal feeding. They had mice and my daughter called them her holiday pets.

Clydey wasn't quite rustic enough for me, it was all a bit too pristine! 🙈 It was an enjoyable holiday though.

I'm a little taken aback that a 6 year old has so much say in holiday locations! If 2 years ago she found a place boring then she was only 4! 6 is totally different.

We love love Pembrokeshire. Especially Little Haven and Broad Haven.

Folly Farm is a nice day out.

HairyToity · 03/01/2020 08:16

I know! We sometimes go to holiday parks, and she loves a mini disco in evening and activities throughout the day. My 6 nearly 7 year old is very full on. She is a hurricane.

If it's not camping or holiday park she just doesn't want to know. If I choose a cottage with stuff going on - playground pool or in a town then I think it'll be fine. Beautiful secluded cottage - she would moan all holiday.

What about quaywest newquay???
That has all the things youre 6year old would like?
Bluestone is lovely but no discos or evening entertainment like on the parks.

emptynesy · 03/01/2020 16:09

I would choose Bluestone personally, or there is celtic haven near Tenby. Folly Farm have lodges/ camping now too.

Fron Fawr is run by someone else now so no using the pool etc. There is also croft holiday cottages near Cardigan.

We loved the look of the static caravans at Oxbridge Bay Hotel. I liked the idea of breakfast included and a daily cleaner. However it was £500 more than having a static caravan for the week at Middlewood Farm by Robin Hood Bay. We're planning a new bathroom so decided to go for Yorkshire.

We have never been to Yorkshire before and thought we'd try somewhere different.

Thanks for your help.

Bluestone, Aberystwyth, Borth, Ynyslas, or Gower I would say.
