Please help an out-of-towner with London trains at Richmond!

I have to change from London Overground to a westbound main line train at Richmond. I've been told that if I use an Oyster to pay for the London Overground part of the journey, I cannot just walk across the platforms from one train to the other, I have to tap out with the Oyster first.

Does this mean that I have to go out through the gates with the Oyster, then go back in again with the paper tickets?

(You can tell how long it is since I last changed trains at Richmond!)

you don't have to go out, no. there is usually an oyster tap disc on the platform because loads of people need to do this, but I couldn't tell you exactly where at Richmond specifically.

if you don't touch out your Oyster the full fare will be deducted from it by default. Assuming you have already bought paper ticket for onward journey?

The machines are at the end of the platform on the SWR side. I always tap but tbh few people seem to do it may not be necessary. There is always someone there if you want to double check .

There will be loads of the yellow Oyster thingies around too as the second post suggests.

There art touch out points inside the station - you don’t need to leave.

Ah, that's what they are! I've seen those tap things without barriers and wondered what they were for.

Relieved - it's a short change during rush hour, with dc and baggage. Having to go out and back in again would have made it really tight.

Thanks!
