Hello all
My 9 year old and I are flying into London (Luton) early sat morning and out late sun eve late nov. (Train already booked) We have the London eye and natural history museum in mind. We would like to see lovely lights and soak up some Christmas ambience. Could you lovely people in the know suggest some nice spots for lovely lights/ atmosphere/ hot choc in the centre of London please? We are staying the night in a hostel off oxford street. Thanks a million

You can get special open top tour buses which take you to see the lights but there are other bus routes which are a bit cheaper. To see the major West End lights, catch the 139 (it stops at Bond St station on Oxford st). you'll turn right onto Regent Street. For once, traffic is a bonus — if you get stuck at the junction for a while, the most colourful of the Oxford Street lights will be right in front of (and above) you. The bus will heads down Regent Street, past Hamleys Christmas windows towards Piccadilly Circus. The bus turns onto Strand, giving you a chance to see the Northbank lights. Finally get off the bus around Aldwych, before the bus turns right and carries on down to Waterloo. From here, it's a short walk to the lights in Covent Garden. Alternatively, you could always skip Covent Garden and instead stay on the bus until Waterloo. From there make your way on foot to Southbank's Winter Market, where you can finish the evening with a steaming cup of mulled wine and hot chocolate.

You can walk a route which takes in a fair few.

There are lights on Oxford Street. From there you can walk down New Bond Street/ Bond Street, which has different lights, to Piccadilly. Turn left onto Piccadilly and you’ll pass Fortnum & Mason and be able to see their window display. From Piccadilly you can cut up to Regent Street and see its lights.
If you come off there into Beak Street you can get to Carnaby Street and see the lights there, and go past Liberty’s and see their window display. Then you can either come back onto Regent Street or Oxford Street.

Thank you both very much! So I now have good plans for either walking or bussing around! Thanks again!

Forgot to mention skating at Somerset house. It’s very atmospheric and really festive. Even if you don’t actually skate, still go along for the ambience. www.somersethouse.org.uk/whats-on/skate-somerset-house Fortnum & Mason sponsors the ice rink, so the massive Christmas tree is decorated with Fortnum hampers, there’s an Alpine-themed foodie Fortnum Lodge, and a shopping arcade.

Lots of the Christmas lights won't be on yet, I would google to find out where to go tbh. Carnaby St have their switch on this week but Oxford street not until the 21st. Most of the others fall somewhere in between.
