Where are you in Surrey? Our junior school did a day trip to Studland bay - we're in Wokingham, which isn't that far from Surrey.

CatIsSleepy · 14/08/2007 22:35

we went to Camber sands a couple of weeks ago...
didn't really notice any litter, choosyfloosy!

it's massive, make sure you get there early if it's a nice day and go far enough along to the quiet part (that's important)... have fun watching the kite surfers, digging up clams, paddling (nice and shallow a long way out)...

i'm in sutton. so more like london really. and it will be me on my own driving with three children. to and from. ( i just drove down from the highlands of scotland this weekend, and dont fancy another loooooooong drive)
hmmm, camber sands? where is that?

No no no no no!
If you only need sand and water then you need to go to Frensham Great Pond. Its not far from Farnham and has a lovely beach, a cordoned off area for swimming and is free I think. Great for a picnic etc.
Sorry can't do links

CatIsSleepy · 14/08/2007 22:49

mm well Camber Sands is either in sussex or kent, i forget which...near rye, if that's any help.
the bit we were on didn't have any facilities as such...(though dh did go off to the loo at one point and wasn't gone for too long...minutes rather than hours)...does that matter? we kept on driving past the main carparks etc as I thought it might just be too busy there, to the part where you can just park by the beach...there's a big shingle bank, then sand below.

Clary · 14/08/2007 23:00

never mind cyclon we're in Derby and the nearest beach is Skegness which is crap.

Nearest decent beach is prob Whitby abotu 2.5hrs away (sigh)

Clary · 14/08/2007 23:01

and blinkin' cold an all

From Surrey, how far is it to The Witterings? I grew up in Middx and we used to go there for the day - there is sand there, possibly also shingle (and def seaweed because I lost a shoe in it once), but also a nice wide bit of grass for sandless picnics

Also to Goring. Not sure which is nearest.

WendyWeber · 14/08/2007 23:04

Goring (sand at low tide, like Brighton et al)

West Wittering (nr Chichester). I think it's Goring with the grass, but IIRC Keef Richard recently bought a Wittering beach hut

cylon · 14/08/2007 23:10

thank you .
lots to check into.

I used to live in Kingswood, Surrey (middle) and we used to drive to Littlehampton, very sandy but apparently lots of amusement arcades these days.

Camber is on the Kent side of Rye, can take longer than expected due to slow drivers and not being able to overtake on the twisty roads. Fab sand and Rye is lovely. Check the tides though, when it's in, it's a bit crap.

Does Hove have sand? Or Eastbourne? I should know but can't remember...

WendyWeber · 14/08/2007 23:26

I think both Hove and Eastbourne are pebbles at high tide + sand at low tide, like Brighton (and Goring).

Cylon, I've been checking out those links I posted; Goring is where I remember the grass from, with the houses behind - it is near Worthing and nearer to London, but I think you should def try West Wittering, even though it's a bit further.

multimap with red circle at West Wittering. Worthing (and Goring) pretty much directly south of London, c 50 miles from Sutton; W Wittering maybe 70 miles, bit of a dogleg journey but worth it!
