Airbnb virgin... Edinburgh!

Sheepishly admitting that I'm way behind the times and have never booked Airbnb before. We are a family of 5 with 3 children aged between 12 and 9. We do lots of small trips away around the UK throughout the year. Normally we book 2 rooms somewhere basic like Premier Inn.

This used to work well as my eldest has autism and doesn't sleep so he'd be in one room with me or dh and the others would be next door, able to sleep at a reasonable hour.

Eldest is now getting much better with his sleep and me and dh would actually like to sleep in the same bed when we have a little trip away so we're thinking of getting apartments.

We're planning a week in Edinburgh next May (I know it's ages away) and there's some lovely airbnb's but, I dunno, for some reason I'm worried something would go wrong? Don't know what I think will go wrong. Gross property? Non existent property? I've no idea.

The trips are organised to the max in order to prepare eldest so I don't like the idea that something may not go to plan.

Can anyone put my mind at rest and explain how it works, what's good about it, what to look out for, etc?

Just read the reviews Smile

I used it for the first time last week. I didn't want a hotel as my DCs are mid teens and I felt we all needed a bit more privacy. Wanted somewhere we could chill and relax and keep the costs down by self catering. I had similar concerns to you, was convinced we'd arrive and it would be a hovel or not exist. I'm a bit of a worrier anyway and I was going to be on my own with my DCs. Honestly couldn't have been better.
I read all the reviews before I chose the house for us and didn't just pick the cheapest.

For my first time it was fab.

Agree with PP, just read the feedback, you may be happier with a superhost (experienced hosts with lots of positive feedback).
We've used it many times with no issues, good luck!

I second go for a Superhost.
I never stay anywhere without reviews and usually just look at superhost properties. Have stayed in lovely places through airbnb and haven’t ever had a bad experience, possibly because I’m so careful reading reviews (read paranoid!)

Read the feedback! We've used Booking.com and homeaway too for apartments plus sites like cottages for you . Only once in 15 years has it not been as described with these. However with Airbnb the one time it was not as good plus check other listings because Airbnb were more expensive for the same property booked elsewhere when I last booked self catering!

i have stayed in a couple of airbandb in edinburgh and they have all been lovely, read the reviews, check the photos, see what matters to you (some didn't have wifi so i rejected them)

Thanks everyone. You've made me feel so much more confident about it! I've been reading reviews and have yet to come across anything negative. Maybe that was what was making me feel uneasy. Just have to get dh to agree on one now but that shouldn't be a problem as he normally just does a cursory glance and says uh huh, whatever you think is best. Always works in my favour

People in Edinburgh are getting increasingly militant about Air BnB and short term lets generally, hollowing out parts of the city like the old town, driving up rents, causing stress with noise and anti-social behaviour. Of course choose what you want to do, but perhaps do so with this in mind.
