We are going to try our first uk family holiday as family of four next August. Really want to try Cornwall. We have 6 year old and 18 month old by next summer. Want something that young children to enjoy. Nice beaches, rock pooling. Would like to be in nice village near the beach. What would people recommend?

Rock? Probably ticks all of your boxes. You can get the ferry across to Padstow too

Many thanks. I liked the sound of Rock. We like pleasant /smart places but some articles seemed to suggest it can be a bit snobby?

Mawgan Porth would be a good option for you

It’s only a few miles from Newquay where there’s an aquarium, zoo etc....

Rock is really snobby but I go there every year with my family and I think the snobbiness is decreasing / easily ignored!

As someone suggested, Mawgan Porth is also lovely. Probably nicer even than Rock.

Go to Pembrokeshire - its how Cornwall used to be before it became so commercialised (and expensive)!

I live in Cornwall and would say it depends on what you are looking for.
Do you want big towns, or relaxed beaches? Moorland walks, or small city life?

Janeyraemer · 01/08/2019 16:00

I would say relaxed beaches where we can do rock pooling and paddle and nice villages we can potter around and visit nice cafes and shops.

I really like Mawgan Porth when the kids were little - great for digging very large pits! We also loved Treyarnon, Constantine, Harlyn and Boobys Bay. Lots of fun with a wave cut swimming pool, rock pools etc and several very different beaches in close proximity. I also love the Lizard.

We also loved going to the gardens like Glendurgan with its maze!

@Janeyraemer mevagissy, Port Issac, Perranporth and Bude would all fit your criteria and are lovely places to stay.

Pentewan sands campsite is lovely and has mobile homes. Private beach with kayaks, paddle boarding etc, 2 pools and entertainment during day and evening. Soft play and arcade. Walk to tiny Pentewan village or Mevagissey. Can get the boat from Mevagissey to Fowey. Gardens of Heligan, Eden Project and various attractions not far away.

We really like SE Cornwall around Looe and Polperro. less busy than the north coast but the beaches etc are just as lovely. my kids loved crabbing off the quay in Looe or rock pooling on the west looe beaches. Lots of good things for little ones to do nearby too.

According to my DB, Cornwall is full atm. Nose to tail traffic. Be aware just how busy it gets in August. Bring plenty of money!

Praa Sands between Helston and Penzance is a lovely, long family friendly beach with good rock pools at the western end.

Some lovely places to choose from in Cornwall. Have a look at Tregongeeves, they are very well set up for children, close to the beach, have an indoor pool and soft play (not open to public) and are pretty central. Easy to get to Eden Project, Mevagissey or other bits of busy Cornwall, but this area is quite laid back with some lovely sandy beaches. Accommodation is exceptional with private outside space, BBQ and essential bits left in the kitchen to use.
Owners are super friendly and have farm animals which you're welcome to pet, collect eggs from chickens etc. Although we live in Cornwall ourselves we stayed here last year (my parents took one of the smaller cottages too) and I've booked again for Spring half term just us!

Everywhere on The coast in Cornwall is lovely. I am bias but I love the North Coast. As most of us know Newquay is a little insane at the time of year (I live a few miles away?) but how about one of the smaller villages nearby! Mawgan Porth or a little further outwards Padstow is Treyarnon, Harlyn etc.

Padstow and Rock are stunning and less lively (in the terms of night life, hen and stag dos) but both Padstow & Rock get insanely busy in the summer. Padstow is crazy in the holidays. People everywhere! Polzeath is lovely (not too far from Rock).

Also how about Wadebridge? A nice unique town, not quite as busy as the others, not right on the coast but only a 10 minute drive. You also have the Camel Trail. A scenic cycle route from Padstow-Wadebridge-Bodmin then onto Wenford bridge.

Cornwall is busy but it’s beautiful!

There are so many beautiful places but I don’t think you will be disappointed anywhere on the North Coast!
