Snowdon if you don't like heights

Dh and the Dc (early teens) want to climb Snowdon. I hate heights - I'm ok with big hills etc but can't do anything with a sheer drop.

I've said I'm not coming but Dh says there are some really easy paths which are just like walking up a hill and no sheer drops. I've had a google but can't find anything about this specifically.

Can anyone advise please?

Try the Llanberis Path. It's the easiest but a bit boring and it gets quite crowded in the summer. Nothing scary about it.

Scripto · 26/07/2019 08:19

It’s mostly a big hill but the last bit at the top is a bit steeper and scary.

EnlightenedOwl · 26/07/2019 08:21

Yes if you do the Llanberis Path no scrambling or edge climbing. Clogwyn where you go under the railway you come out on an edge but the path is well away from it you wont notice. I have acute height fear and tackled Llanberis Path with no problems. You must do it its amazing

Fairylea · 26/07/2019 08:22

You could go up on the train and meet them at the top? Grin

Snowdon Mountain Railway.

Train is expensive cramped and hardly any summit time

I don't like heights and I've done it a couple of times and been fine. It's really worth doing.

If you're really not keen you could take the miners path which is just a very gradual incline, and you could stay at the lake with a book while they carry on up the steeper bit. Just don't try to park at the Pen y Pass car park (always full) , get the bus up from Llanberis!

You'll be fine. It was the Snowdon Race last weekend from Llanberis, which was televised on S4C. It will be on catch-up, so you I'll be able to see some of the path. Alternatively, Google the Snowdon Race website as that will probably show the Llanberis path.

LordEmsworth · 26/07/2019 08:38

I am not good with heights and I've done a few times. The bit at the top has quite a narrow path but if you do the Llanberis path, you're never right on the brink, if you don't want to be. Pyg & Miner's, there are a couple of bits which required a bit of nerve but the views are amazing...

littlequestion · 26/07/2019 09:37

Thanks all. I'll havew a look at the Snowdon Races and do more investigating into Llanberis. I really am a total wuss with heights (my legs turn to jelly and I can't move)

How fit are you?

I've walked up Snowdon and found it very challenging, it really isn't just a 'gentle hike'. Even on the easier paths you will have some scrambling to do. When I reached the top there is no way I could have walked down, which I find harder than walking up hill, I had to wait for a space on the train. (Which can be fully booked at times).

Plan carefully, if your DH & DC want to do it you don't have to go with them.

littlequestion · 26/07/2019 11:35

I'm reasonably fit (can run 5k in 30 mins on a good day).

I looked at an aerial view of Llanberis and it still looks a bit hairy at the top.

Tempted to send them all off and stay at home with a good book!

OP, I think sometimes it's easy to give in to our fears - many of which are over-exaggerated in our minds. The Llanberis path is easy and if you didn't know you were on a big hill, you'd never know... if you know what I mean. It's beautiful and atmospheric and you will feel such a sense of pride at the end of the day. My advice would be to go for it and stop if you feel less comfortable - whichI don't think you will. It's not on a par with bungee jumping or hurling yourself out of a plane, it's more akin to a walk in a Swiss meadow. Give it a go, you'll hate yourself if you don't.

user1493494961 · 26/07/2019 17:49

If you go up via the Llanberis path you could always just go to the Halfway Cafe and then see how you feel. It's a pretty easy walk to halfway, hardest part is the tarmac road to the start of the path.

littlequestion · 26/07/2019 18:00

I'm liking the Swiss meadow analogy!

OP posts:
Finfintytint · 26/07/2019 18:04

Yes, tarmac path is definitely the hardest part. Going up was fine but I had to walk backwards on it on the way down as my knees had given up. Met another bloke with the same predicament and we ambled along together backwards.
