Potty training on holiday in Isle of Wight HELP

I've never posted before, so apologies if not in right place etc.

We went to The Sun Inn, Hulverstone, Isle of Wight tonight and was shocked when we were approached by a member of staff. We were told another party using the pub had made a complaint about my just 2 year old using his potty in the pub garden. Please keep in mind we were in the far corner of the garden, placing him out of sight of the rest of the customers, using a potty with disposable liners that we take home with us, therefore there was no hygiene issue etc. Also keep in mind that 3 tables away there was a dog at a table who had defecated once and had at least one wee on the floor in the short time we were sat there!

When we questioned the issue with using the potty, we were just told someone had complained and they needed to act upon it. We asked the solution and was told we had to carry our just 2 year old across the garden, into the restaurant and into the baby changing room to use the potty instead. I pointed out that this is obviously not possible with a toddler who is potty training and can only give extreme short notice of needing the toilet.

I was so shocked by the staff and other customers that we left straight away!

Just wondered if anyone had any ideas of pubs where this might not have happened on the Isle of Wight so we don't have further probs on our holiday?

Thanks

Obviously people could see or they wouldn’t have complained!

If somewhere has a toilet then use it

I don't think any where will be ok with this, as a rule. I took my son to the toilet, where available.

Honestly?! I’d be grossed out if a toddler was using a potty in a pub garden where I was eating/drinking. If someone complained he wasn’t out of sight. It really wasn’t necessary as the pub had loos. If he can’t hold it for the minute or so that it would have taken you to take him and the potty to the ladies or the baby change then he probably isn’t ready to be potty training. What on earth do you do if you’re in the car or in a shop? I have a potty training toddler so I really do sympathise but rather than looking for pubs that are ok with him pooing in the corner of the garden, I’d probably try to pre-empt the urge need by putting him on the potty regularly and/or put him in a pull-up if he’s prone to toileting accidents.

I think you should have taken him to the toilet with the potty. I'm currently potty training my son so I do understand about encouraging them to go but if a toilet is available you should use it. It's a bit gross for others!

If he can't wait for a few minutes to get to a toilets, then he's not potty trained enough for outings.

happyasasandboy · 24/07/2019 21:42

I don't think it is unreasonable to ask you to take him to the toilet. It can't take much longer to pick him up and take him inside than to take him across the pub garden and out of site.

I am absolutely not opposed to an emergency outside wee (for me or my three kids TBH), but only if there is no other option. And in this case, there's a toilet very close.

Honestly, I think it's not nice to do what you did, I have potty trained two kids and never let them wee in public - we found a toilet, unless in the middle of nowhere where you use the "tree toilet" (dd still calls it that at 18). I saw a lady do this at the park in front of hundreds of parkrunners just 50m from newly renovated toilets, wrong. Use training pants if need be but no excuses if there's a toilet nearby

Looneytune253 · 24/07/2019 21:52

I don't understand, surely there was a toilet in the pub? Why couldn't you take LO into the toilet?

Bunnybigears · 24/07/2019 21:57

If they cant wait the short trip from beer garden to pub toilet they arent really far along enough in potty training for trips out. All you are really doing is catching the wee.

You were in the wrong and it sounds like your child isn't ready for potty training. Sorry.

You should have complained about the dog poo though. That's not acceptable either.

ShabbyNat · 31/07/2019 19:17

Im sorry, but Ive got to say that just turned 2 is very young to be potty training in your sort of situation.
If it was in the park for a picnic lunch with friends or the mums & tots group then it would be totally different-I did this & took my eldest DD behind a tree with her potty & potty bags, then had several requests to use the potty!!! Or even take your toddler to your car in the car park, couldn't of been further than the toilets!!

Rosieposy4 · 31/07/2019 19:24

Really not ok to use a potty in a pub garden where people are eating, they must have seen it, otherwise how would they have known?
( potty trained 6 children , 4 of them my own)
Don’t use poor behaviour by others ( dogs owners) to excuse poor manners on your behalf.
