Stop off on the M4

We're driving from the midlands to west wales next week, taking the M5 down to Bristol then the M4 across.
I'm looking for a picnic stop off on the way to break the journey that's not a motorway service station. We don't mind venturing off the motorway, but not too far off.
Does anyone have any recommendations? Country parks/National Trust or similar?

Tredegar House is at Junction 28 of the M4. National Trust with a lovey lake in the grounds.

Ooh that sounds promising - thanks.

Not far from the bridge, in Wales, Caldicot Castle and Country Park is a great alternative to an M4 motorway services stop for all the family. There are picnics areas, bbq areas, a play area and a tea room. Entry is free and there is often a ‘have a go’ archery stand in the grounds. You can even climb the battlements.

By the way, if you’re coming from the midlands, you cut a huge cornet off if you come via the M50 and Monmouth rather than taking the M5 all the way down to Bristol. I do the trip several times a year to see the in-laws!

Corner not cornet obvs

Thank you - I'll look at that. Google maps was showing the m5 to Bristol but always up for cutting off a cornet Wink

What Watto1 said, M50 all the way. And I second Tredegar House
