Never been to Fishguard but nearby is eg. Tenby, Pembroke Castle, Folly farm (recommend), Oakwood, Dinosaur Park. Go on boat from Tenby to Caldey Island. Picton Castle.

There's not loads in Fishguard itself. You can find a nice picnic spot and watch the ferry, there's a swimming pool at the leisure centre and a few parks dotted around.

A short drive away you have far more...
Castell Henllys Iron Age Fort,
Hangar 5 trampoline park in Haverfordwest,
There are loads of beaches nearby along the Pembrokeshire coast or even head over to Ceredigion,
Picton Manor,
Scolton House,
Clerkenhill,
Dyfed Shire Horse Farm,
The bug farm in St Davids,
St Davids Cathedral
Oakwood (can use Tesco vouchers). It was looking a bit run down when I was there last but the boys really enjoyed themselves).
I think there's a chocolate place in Haverfordwest...I've just googled and it's the Wickedly Welsh Chocolate Co.

A bit of a further drive you have:
Folly Farm (can use Tesco vouchers if you have them) - my eldest is 6 and loves it there,
Pembroke Castle,
Cardigan Island Farm Park (if you head to Cardigan the Cardigan Bay Brownies are lovely as is the Pizza Tipi),
The Wildlife Centre in Cilgerran,
Heatherton World of Adventure,
Manor Park,
The Dinosaur Park.

As long as you're prepared to drive you should be able to find plenty to keep a 6 year old very happy!

Just be prepared for the fact that it rains. A lot.

Munt beach is gorgeous, St David's lovely.

It is a wonderful part of the world. Take waterproofs and enjoy. The bonus is when you get dry days (and the weather can be amazing) you just feel like you beat all odds and it's super (whereas in Cornwall if it rains you feel cheated!)

Also it is so unspoiled and uncrowded.

Lucky you.

Fishguard doesn't have much but you can get the ferry to Ireland which is one of my children's favourite days out.

If you are bringing a dog please check which beaches have a ban. Folly farm, castell henllys, pembroke castle, walk round the lily pond. But avoid the dinosaur park!

We often holiday in Pembrokeshire and have stayed in Fishguard. I second the picnic spots/viewing areas. Also the fish and chip shop does fabulous (made on the premises) ice creams. Pick up a free Pembrokeshire paper, it'll have a map showing where all the beaches, places of interest are. @welshmumofboys did a brilliant list. Have a lovely time.

If you can persuade him to walk, you can see porpoises from Dinas Island. There's a nice pub at Pwllgwealod at one end.

Tregwynt woollen mill near Mathry.

There are lots of pebbly coves between Fishguard and St Davids that we had fun exploring as kids.

Thank you for your suggestions.
A little shocked that we need to prepare for rain! I assumed it would be dry at least in August. We usually go to the isle of wight where the weather is glorious but we have grown bored of the same places.
Some lovely ideas for me to look up.
I did google the area and found there are sites to see wild dolphins and puffins which really interests me but not sure where is best for these. I will be driving. I was also looking for lunch/dinner locations.

It will rain sporadically but nothing a decent rain coat can't deal with. The west coast always has more rain.

I grew up there and we take DS (5) back every year. It's a stunning area.
