Recommendations for a hotel for Christmas?

DP and I are hoping to have two or three nights in a hotel this Christmas, a first for us. We're having a rough time atm, I have cancer and have just started chemo but should be through it and hopefully pretty well by late December. Usually we have family here, but think no hosting or cooking would be great!

We're in London and would prefer somewhere within c.150 miles, in or near a nice small town, lovely surroundings, restaurant on site (we'd like a good Christmas lunch!). Doesn't have to be luxurious, just comfortable and welcoming. Pool for DP to swim would be a bonus. Budget moderate, not hundreds of £ a night.

Grateful for suggestions!

I hope you feel better soon OP Flowers

what about the clarion collection hotel in st albans? you can get a train from london st pancras direct to st albans city. it's a lovely town, has some nice walks, a market and gorgeous christmas trees in december.

all the best x

Thanks sleep, I'll check it out! I have barely been to St Albans, so that's a good suggestion.

Is Cornwall too far? You can fly to Newquay from London and I could suggest some lovely hotels.

Ah sorry posted too soon.

I'm sorry to hear you're unwell and I think a trip away at Christmas will be just the thing to cheer you up!

Bloodybridget · 10/07/2019 18:57

blobby thanks but that is too far, I love Cornwall but we are aiming to drive, I don't want to fly or cope with Christmas trains. And thank you too for your good wishes Smile

How about Wroxall Abbey in Warwickshire, not far from Warwick? We've stayed there before for Christmas. Although it's got the vibe of a stately home, it's also very chilled. There's a panelled bar, lovely grounds and a sitting room with squishy sofas. Pool and spa on site too, plus a tiny cathedral designed by Sir Christopher Wren. The Christmas package is really reasonable, and Christmas lunch itself is a thing of beauty.

And I forgot to add my good vibes too.

Bloodybridget · 12/07/2019 14:30

Oh thanks Crepuscular, that looks like good value! I hardly know Warwickshire at all, and DP does fancy a rural location! Also thanks for good wishes.

I just checked the Christmas package, and saw they haven't updated yet. But it's been pretty much the same price for the past few years. I remember we thought that the cost of the Christmas lunch effectively made our room that night free. They're great on the little things too; I have some inconvenient food allergies and my dessert was a specially made exquisite prosecco jelly with strawberries and tiny meringues. Wherever you choose, have a great time.

Thanks again Crepuscular

Christmas deals do tend to be pricy.

Bloodybridget · 14/07/2019 01:59

Yes indeed Ellmau. But I've had to miss three holidays this year because of the illness, so I feel ok about splurging!

Just to say thanks again for all replies - we have booked a night in Rye later this week and are going to check out a hotel that does a Christmas package, you go to a fancier place (the George) for meals. The George itself is completely booked up so this seems like a good option. Excited!

@Bloodybridget sounds exciting!

Bloodybridget · 22/07/2019 14:19

@sittingonacornflake we ended up booking somewhere else (Jeake's House) which just does B&B but looks v nice (and Father Christmas brings everyone a present Wink). The receptionist said all the restaurants will be open, and recommended a pub for Christmas lunch. V excited!
