Road trip in South UK

Hi, We are going to take the ferry from Rosslare to Pembroke in August and will take our car. We are going to do a 10 day trip around the south starting in St Ives. We have two boys 12 and 11. We plan to take our tent and just stop for the night in areas that we see and like on the way. Would we need to book ahead at campsites for our tent? Do the campsites generally sell out? We don't really want to be tied to a particular area so would love the flexibility to go wherever and whenever. Are there places/campsites you could recommend for us? We are hoping to do Cornwall - Brighton - maybe London - Windsor/Lego land - Oxford - Bath. Can't wait to go. Smile

I think a 12 and 11 year old would be better suited to Thorpe Park or Chessington than Legoland. Plus, all theme parks are heaving in August, but Legoland always seems the worst for crowds and queues.
The nicest campsites and the ones that are near to popular attractions are likely to be full in August. Of course, you could find the odd gem on the spur of the moment, but I wouldn’t chance it. There’s nothing worse than driving into a nice campsite as it’s getting dark with two hungry children, only to ind out that they’re full.
Whilst near Bath, or en route from Cornwall, I’d try to go to Stonehenge. Also, even though it will be busy, the Eden Project is well worth a visit.

August is school holiday time in England so the roads are going to be busy with holiday makers, especially Devon and Cornwall.
You're attempting to cover a lot of distance too. It's about 2 and a half hours from Pembroke to Bristol, and another 3 and a half from Bristol to St Ives.

You’ve got big distances to cover in that time. How about sticking to Devon & Cornwall or Pembrokeshire/Bath.

yes, the campsites in cornwall in particular sell out. if you are travelling in August then you either need to go to non touristy places or plan very much in advance with regards to where you are going to stop overnight.
