Hello. We are off to Windsor and London in July ( Wimbledon fortnight) and don’t want to pay too much as it’s not our main holiday. There are 5 of us. 4 adults and 1 child (but we are paying as 4th adult is mother in law). I had been looking at air bnb but can’t find anything I like at reasonable budget. I’ve come across a couple of places at very reasonable prices. Firstly premier inn in Staines upon Thames. Secondly Staybridge Suites Heathrow ( Bath road). Would be grateful for any views on which would be best place as a base (or whether neither are good). We will be out and about every day but might like a local place to eat the occasional night.

If anyone has any alternative suggestions please feel free to mention - but I am trying to keep budget low. Thanks

OP where are you planning on visiting? Windsor and central London plus MIL needing to get to Hampton Court or something else? Whether you want to use the car more than public transport or not will affect best options.

SurreyMumOfOne · 19/05/2019 14:27

Oops, sorry for the double post! First one said there was a connection issue, so I didn't think it had posted! Sorry!

Thanks. I think I worded my title badly. We are planning on doing a day or two in Windsor. Then one day mother in law will go to Hampton court where she will meet her friend. We will probably go into central
London that day as she plans on having dinner with her friend early evening. We are travelling by car and happy to drive round but also even happier if can jump on a train at Least one day.

Staines is a good location and centrally placed for Station with direct trains to Waterloo and Windsor. 216 bus goes to Hampton Court for the price of an oyster fare (use contactless card to pay).

Usual chain restaurants a couple of minutes walk away including local Italian Caffe Gondola, and Nostrano Lounge.

About 15 minutes drive to Windsor via Runnymede (parking can be expensive, so look on the council website for options.

Thanks. I think I will book the premier in. In Staines. Thanks for all help

Enjoy your trip CanI!

The travellodge in Windsor is cheap. I found it for £48

CraftyGin · 19/05/2019 16:16

Staines Premier Inn is brand new and close to the station.

Egham Premier Inn is close to Egham Station.

The Staines one has its own restaurant, and there are loads of good places to eat in town (all through the town, not just by the bridge Hmm )

To get to Wimbledon, you take the train to Twickenham and then change to the Wimbledon line (same platform). The 216 bus goes to Hampton Court.

It’s east to get to Windsor too, by train to Windsor and Eton Riverside, or by the No 8 bus.

Slough is not good for Wimbledon as it is on the Paddington Line.

Happy to answer any questions about Staines.

CanIretireearly · 19/05/2019 16:22

Thanks so much. Is Staines a busy town? I’ve never been so dont know anything

Its a very ordinary town, not particularly busy although parking might be a challenge if you need to park on Saturday morning. If driving in just be aware that if there are problems on the M25 or M3 traffic can get a bit snarled up.

CraftyGin · 19/05/2019 16:31

It is very ordinary for the South East, which means it is quite busy during the day and in the evenings. It is very, very accessible to modest budgets.

CanIretireearly · 19/05/2019 16:39

Thanks. It really is just going to be a base but always good to have a bit of a lively town

Just out of interest why wouldn't you stay in windsor?

BuffaloCauliflower · 19/05/2019 16:49

Staines as perfectly fine, loads of restaurants and bars now throughout the town centre so you’ll have plenty of choice. The Premier Inn is central and 5 minutes walk to the station. Fast train is about 40 minutes to Waterloo. Reasonably easy drive to Hampton Court, but try not to go at the weekend if you can help it as the traffic on that route is horrendous and it’ll take you hours!

ChippyMinton · 19/05/2019 16:56

Good point re w/e traffic to Hampton Court - alternative route driving via Walton On Thames bridge is an option if it looks busy (on google maps traffic, if it’s showing red on the Kempton racecourse side of Hampton, avoid!)

CanIretireearly · 19/05/2019 17:01

Thanks for all the advice. Mumsnet is so helpful.

Windsor could have been a place to stay but couldn’t find anything in our budget especially with there being 5 of us

No way is Walton Bridge quicker than the more direct routes from Staines to Hampton Court. Personally, I would go via Shepperton and Lower Sunbury, rather than Ashford Common/Sunbury Cross/Kempton.

It’s only the last mile from Hampton to Hampton Court that is a 20mph crawl.

CraftyGin · 19/05/2019 17:08

Windsor is 27 minutes further out from London on the train, assuming Waterloo Line (for Wimbledon).

ChippyMinton · 19/05/2019 19:01

Have a great stay Smile

ChippyMinton · 19/05/2019 19:06

(Journey times are within 2 minutes of being the same under normal conditions but when traffic is stacked back to Kempton it’s at least 20 minutes faster - I drive it regularly)

CanIretireearly · 20/05/2019 16:40

Thanks for all the help. Got premier inn at Staines booked for just over £300 total for 3 nights, 2 rooms, 5 people- bargainSmile
