We are looking to have a week away in a cottage in cornwall somewhere over the summer but don't know the area at all. We've been looking at Fowey and also the area around Bedruthen steps. Can anyone who knows the area give any recommendations. Family of four DC 14 and12 both boys.

Sorry Gertie, presses too soon.

“St Ives is crazy busy in the summer, we went on a day trip last year and decided to park and ride because the roads were gridlocked (this was June so not the main holidays either), we eventually found a spot on the beach and looking behind me at the prom you couldn't see a place where it wasn't 4 people deep”.

Which beach were you on? I’m surprised to read that. We’re from Cornwall, been visiting St. Ives from our town since a child in the 60s, had to leave Cornwall 10 years ago for work but spend a couple of weeks in St. Ives in July and December. Yes, the town gets very busy, but we’ve never had any trouble at all finding plenty of space on one of the town’s 4 beaches. If you want peace and quiet, get off the chugger early and use Carbis Bay. 3 miles of usually pretty empty, golden sands, lovely cafe, loos etc.
Oh I want to go home now.

It was the harbour beach, we looked at Porthminster and it was packed so walked through the town to the harbour, our youngest was in a pushchair and it was awful getting through the crowds on and off the narrow pavements with cars nose to tail.
When we got back to Perranporth we were talking to a local from Cubert and he said the locals never venture there in the summer months any more because it's too busy.

We used to holiday there when I was a kid in the 80's and have great memories and so was really disappointed when I went back as an adult with my own family, I wanted them to love it as much as I used to.

Here now. The beaches between Padstow and Newquay are good. Harlyn and Constantine Bay. You can do the lizard from there and also Eden. St Mawes and the Roseland less commercial, more retired folk. I'd not stay East of the Roseland, all seems a bit quiet and not very 'Cornwall'
