Long weekend with family less than 2 hrs from London?

My ILs are coming from abroad. Normally their visits consist of them sitting around waiting for the kids to get home from school and commenting on Every. Bloody. Thing. I do. To preserve my sanity this time we want to take them away for a few nights. It will be early May bank holiday so a lot of places are booked but there still seem to be things available. ILs are late 60s and very physically fit and active, happy to do long walks/hikes. They like luxurious places and luckily they are paying so cost isn’t a huge factor.

Criteria are:
—Within 2 hr drive of west London (could push this a bit)
—Naice, and not too crowded, area in/near some sort of natural beauty or interest
—Comfortable cottage/airbnb/hotel available within distance of a lovely beach, lake, forest, or other outdoor area that we can explore with our kids (ages 5 and 10)
—Ideally also walkable to a few pubs and shops, maybe even a cute village
—Historical significance would be a plus

Please help! We’ve lived in the U.K. for six years but there’s still a lot we don’t know...

Purbecks in Dorset. Swanage for beach.Kimmeridge for fossil hunting. Woods, walks, pubs a plenty. Coffee Castle for History. Loads to do!

Stratford upon Avon. Cute town, Shakespeare, canal boat trip, decent food.

Forest Lodge in the New Forest is in the small town of Lyndhurst. Nice family rooms and an indoor pool. www.newforesthotels.co.uk/forest-lodge-hotel/ It’s close to the Beaulieu Motor Museum and Bolderwood Deer Sanctuary. Also it’s not too far at all from a good bike hire place (Forest Leisure at Burley) and several good cycling paths and Eling Tide Mill Experience.

West Wittering. It's just south of Chichester with its beautiful cathedral and great theatres. Outstanding beaches, East Head, Chichester Harbour AONB, great places to eat, Fishbourne Palace (Roman remains), beautiful Bosham and Alton Tours well within an hours drive.

Lots of Roman history in Cirencester, industrial history in Swindon and stone circle at Avebury]] - plus a million twee Cotswold villages in the vicinity.

The Peak District and N Norfolk are surely more than 2 hours drive from W London?

BikeRunSki · 08/04/2019 07:45

Arrggghhh....

Hotel link again

Cotswold Water Park is wildlife lakes, not water sports. It’s very calm, lots of walks etc.

beachyhead · 08/04/2019 07:45

Arundel? Lots of walks by river, South Downs, Castle, Roman Ruins nearby....
