We are lucky enough to have 2 days in York this week with no children, if anyone has any ideas of things to do, great restaurants, tea shops, cocktails bars they would be appreciated. We are staying in the centre. Thank you

Betty’s tea rooms is a must. Try one of its famous fat rascal scones – it’s a cross between a scone and a rock cake, and is seriously delicious!
York Minster
Wander through The Shambles
Jorvik Viking Centre
York Castle museum
Walk the city walls
Brew and Brownie for excellent coffee and pancakes.
The Minster Gate second hand book shop (has five floors!)
There’s also places like Stonegate where you can find the upper-end of high street stores, andBlake Street, home to the colourful Yorkshire Soap Company and an Alice-in-Wonderland-style boutique, The Imaginarium. Just wander around the city centre and you’ll stumble across many unique finds.
Two of the most famous pubs are The Guy Fawkes Inn where Guy Fawkes was born and The Golden Fleece, said to be the most haunted pub in York. There’s also a good selection of cocktail bars, including Evil Eye Lounge which is hidden behind a speciality gin store.
A fun way to see the city, you can hire your own little red boat and drive it down the river. The boats cost from £20-40 for one hour, depending on the season. The weather wasn’t great when we hired ours, but it was still good fun, and great to see the city from a different perspective.

Wow that’s lots to think about, thank you. Five floor second hand bookshop sounds intriguing as does the Evil Eye!

Sorry, but don’t.

I live here, and have loved the city for nearly 30 years. But if you’re planning to be here on a Saturday, just don’t. Unless you like marauding gangs of hens puking up the Cornish Pasty Shop window at 12:30 in the afternoon, and stage filming each other abusing homeless people.

Pinkarsedfly · 07/04/2019 18:43

Stags, not stage. DYAC.

Pinkarsedfly · 07/04/2019 18:44

You’ll be ok in the week. Ignore me. Disillusioned.

@Pinkarsedfly I'm from York too - it's the binge drinking capital of Europe apparently. But it's still the most beautiful city, and one which I never tire of.

Just wander down all the little alleys and around the bar walls - you can see into all the gorgeous gardens and look for the masons marks on the walls.

The original trembling madness pub is wonderful - the roof windows look up right to the minster.

In the hiscox building on peasholme green, there's a soviet rocket in the foyer!

The best place us locals often go to eat and drink is fossgate/walmgate. Paraiso/kho san rd/hop/fossgate social are all buzzy places

Have a great time 😬

Planning to be there on Thursday and Friday

I almost live in york and I used to blooming love the place but I feel disillusioned too
If you hit unlucky you’ll see what pinkarse witnessed
If you’re lucky then it will be wonderful
We wandered in on good Friday
How did I forget it was good Friday?
It was heaving
You couldn’t move
Not very pleasant at all
So I’d try to come mid week if possible next time or out of season.
