Hi, we are staying in Chepstow for a few days during the Easter holidays. What can you recommend for us to do in the surrounding area? We have kids who are 3, 5 and 7. Thanks.

Chepstow Castle
Goodrich Castle
Caldicott Castle ..... if you like castles
Forest of Dean
Tintern, fab walks around Tintern & lovely Tintern Station cafe & play area
Bristol not too far, lovely zoo there
Cardiff

littlecabbage · 07/04/2019 09:02

Yes, we can do castles! We know Bristol quite well so probably won't head there this time, but thanks for the other suggestions.

Slimbridge is not too far, perfect for the age of your children!
Gower for the beach?
Another castle...Raglan castle! 😊

Didiusfalco · 07/04/2019 09:10

It’s lovely round there. My kids loved the sculpture trail round the Forest of Dean and there is also a grufallo trail. If you’re National Trust members or interested in gardening then Westbury Court is lovely. Go to Monmouth, that’s a nice town and it’s really not far from Chepstow to Bristol either.

Beerandpancakes · 07/04/2019 09:12

If it rains then techniquest in Cardiff or Cardiff museum both good for those ages.

littlecabbage · 07/04/2019 10:08

I hadn't though of Gower but that's a great idea. Fingers crossed for good weather!

We are National Trust members, so that's an option. Is there much to do/see in Monmouth?

Which castle(s) are best for young children?

I'd be interested to look around Cardiff. Just thought as well, there are some Go Jetters destinations in Wales I think - we could check them out if any are near!

Thanks for the Cardiff wet weather options - always good to have!

Puzzlewood
Clearwell caves
Definitely Goodrich
Tintern

brizzlemint · 07/04/2019 13:07

The zip wire place just up the road, it's at the national dive centre.

Techniques in Cardiff
Cardiff Castle
Castell Coch in Cardiff
Check out events at Cardiff Bay
Caerphilly Castle
Rhondda Heritage Park
St Fagans Museum of Castle Life near Cardiff

Monmouth is picturesque but not much there for children, Ross on Wye same.

clairethewitch70 · 07/04/2019 13:15

NT in area
Tredeger House, well worth it
Dyffryn Gardens, nice not much for children unless they like walking around gardens following trails

If you have English Heritage membership you can use it at Cadw sites

Puzzlewood near Coleford is fun and I’ve heard good things about Perrygrove which is also just outside Coleford and near to Puzzlewood (although the two overlap a bit so I would say you probably wouldn’t want to do both)
Sculpture Trail is excellent and you may see wild boar up in the Forest of Dean (not everyone’s cup of tea but just stay away from them if you do see them)
Westonbirt Aboretum is supposed to be great although a bit further away and Slimbridge is a reliably fun day out
Raglan Castle is not bad (not the biggest Castle in Wales) and they sometimes have people dressing up milling around
Monmouth is pretty but fewer things to do for younger kids unless you go for a walk along the Wye (I’m originally from Monmouth and we sometimes take our two to Biblins Bridge for a walk when we go back)
Tintern Old Station is quaint and fun but there isn’t so much to do there - maybe a picnic if the weather is nice, followed by a walk along the Wye from Tintern

MutantDisco · 07/04/2019 13:37

All of the above, plus Symonds Yat to see the Peregrine Falcons. Also, Wye Valley Butterfly zoo isn't too far (Newent).

littlecabbage · 07/04/2019 13:38

Thank you all for these excellent ideas. I'm confident we can fill our time well now.

Look for the Chip Facebook page
(Chepstow children's hub and information page)

Loads on there! And events coming up.

Lots to do in Chepstow:

Castle
Shops
Paint on me pottery shop
Whirlikidz soft play if weather is ropey
Museum - small but free
Over old Wye bridge in Tutshill was where JK Rowling lived so places to spot up there.

Excellent restaurant - Upstairs - look on trip advisor

Tintern abbey
Tintern old station
Brockweir shop and park
Puzzlewood and Perrygrove railway opposite
Loads of bike paths and beautiful walks in Forest of Dean
Beechenhurst lodge

Cardiff is great and Bristol too!

hibbidydibbity · 07/04/2019 14:11

Caldicot castle is still free I think and is lovely with towers and rooms to explore - also a nice new park more for 2-8 year olds

littlecabbage · 07/04/2019 17:41

Thank you - I will get googling!

Thanks again for all the ideas. We explored Chepstow and Cardiff castles, had a boat trip around Cardiff Bay and also saw Cardiff football ground.

Have stored up the other ideas for a trip to the Forest of Dean later in the year Smile
