Suggestions for mini break with 6yo

So DH is going to be away with the boys over half term in May - I’d like to take DS (6) away for a couple of days to do something fun. Thinking of 2-3 nights and trying to keep cost to no more than £250-£300 max. Struggling slightly for ideas other than Legoland which is looking terrifyingly expensive. Any ideas gratefully received!

what about something like romney sands caravan resort? there is a restaurant, mini golf, adventure playground, heated pool and its very near the beach

sleepismysuperpower1 · 23/03/2019 12:43

sorry, forgot to mention it's in Kent

Will have a look! Thank you!

I'm taking 5yo DS to Bristol in May whilst DH is at a stag do. There's lots to do in the centre.

Caravan parks near a beach are fun too. Find one with an indoor pool and you're sorted.

We’ve stayed here before www.broomeparkfarm.co.uk/families-welcome
It’s a B&B on a farm. There’s a zip line, trampoline and lots of toys and games for guests. There are always animals to see – eggs to be collected, calves to feed and often pigs as well.
It’s really close to West Midlands Safari Park which is an excellent (long!) day out and you can get discounted tickets if you just speak to the B and B owner.

We had a lovely break in the Peak District when ds was 5/6 years old. Stayed at Harrington youth hostel in private room. Has a small animal section and lovely grounds.

We went on walks and a great boat trip in caves at Castletown. Had a day at Alton Towers and another at Gulliver’a Kingdom.

You could just get a Premier Inn for a few nights in any city with a pool, cinema and bowling etc. I do that with my DD who is a similar age. Doesn't have to be that far away from your home, either. So much fun! X

What about a cheap chain hotel near Chester and a day at Chester Zoo, then a day looking at Chester with a boat trip on the river, Roman stuff at the museum.

Or York for the Viking stuff and the transport museum?

All excellent ideas! Keep ‘em coming! Thanks so far!

New Forest with a day at Peppa Pig world/ Paultons, a day at splashdown waterslides and a day at the beach.

Highly recommend Northumberland. We went about 4 years ago in may half term. Fantastic, wide open beaches, loads of castles to explore and places liked Alnwick Castle are great for a full day out. Very varied. The other plus was that it was quiet, despite being half term and no traffic.

Hoseasons have been great for DC & I.

Chester with it’s amazing zoo, lovely park which is overrun with squirrels and miniature train would take some beating.

Or Llandudno - walks along the pier, a cable car or train up the Great Orme and ice cream on the promenade.

I went all over the UK with DS when he was growing up and they would be my choices at that age.

Book a Travelodge - cheap and cheerful but perfectly fine for a couple of nights and kids eat breakfast free.

Have fun Smile

I’m taking DD age 8 on a 2 night nature type trip the first weekend of half term, run by Field Studies Council at Juniper Hall in Surrey. Bird watching, pond dipping, small mammal trapping etc. She can’t wait. I think the recommended age range is something like 5 to 8.

Ooo, Chester might be good - it’s not far from the Lego Discovery Centre in Manchester which might be more reasonable cost!

Shame you’re not going before 30th April if your DS is a Lego fan - the zoo has big cats made of Lego until then.
