Recommendations for a beach holiday in the north east

We really want a family holiday in the north east - I want to see Lindisfarne and Hadrian's wall and explore Newcastle and see Durham Cathedral and eat ice cream in the shadow of castles etc. We have there kids 8 and under who love a beach and we'd love sea views for evenings reading and gazing out the window. We all love amusement arcades too so nowhere too upmarket. I don't know the area at all - any recommendations for areas to look at - we'll hire a cottage or airbnb, or maybe a caravan.

Have a look at www.holidaycottages.co.uk/cottages/northumberland.
l'd recommend somewhere like Bamburgh, Seahouses or Craster, they're further up the coast but Newcastle and Durham are easily accessible by car. Also there's Alnwick - if your kids like Harry Potter, they'll love the castle.
Northumberland's my home county and the coast is beautiful. Enjoy it!

Seahorses is lovely as is Bamburgh. Beadnell and Craster are quieter but also great.

Lucky you. Not sure about where to stay but I can recommend things to do.
Hadrian's Wall - Corbridge, Chesters, Houseteads are all good.
Castles - I love Warkworth and Richmond ( bit further south). English Heritage has some excellent events.
Days out - Hexham has a pool, cinema, old gaol. Kirkley Hall is lovely. Kielder is a great day out. Wildfowl Park at Washington, Alnwick Castle/Gardens.
Beaches - the NE has everything!! Tyne mouth, Whitley Bay, Warkworth, Seahouses (too many to list).
Have a great time.

Whitley bay if you want beach, arcades and ice cream shops. They also have a great pool/

I love Seahouses, great crazy golf and apparently, the caravan site near the front is lovely. Close to Dunstanburgh Castle too which is a lovely walk from Craster with children.

Alnmouth is my favourite. OH is from Northumberland so we visit a lot. I will post a list of places to visit tomorrow.

Seahouses! Not sure about the horses 😬

Jackshouse · 18/03/2019 22:01

South Shields has more amusements and then you could get the ferry over to Tynemouth and Whitley bay.

I just love Northumberland. My favourite place is Alnmouth, however for children's attractions Seahouses would be better.
I think the Seahouses beach is nicer than Alnmouth's too,

Morwick Dairy near Warkworth has the best cherry ice cream in the world.

I can also recommend Wheelbirks Palour (not far from Hexham), great food and ice cream but no beach.

Some lovely ice cream places in Tynemouth and Whitley Bay too.

Can you have ice cream for breakfast?
