Night away in a large town/city?

I had some great help from here looking for fishing village holiday last autumn but we sadly had to cancel as Dh called in for major surgery.

Hoping to go away for a night or two, staying in a hotel right in the middle of town.

What town/city do you recommend? Needs to have lots of choice of restaurants/pubs/bars in walking distance.

Also stuff to do that is wet/cold weather friendly as looking to go in March.

We are in sw London.

To suit two adults.

Maybe cinema/music venues too?

Manchester or Liverpool are both great, and only two hours by train from London.

Cardiff is easy to get to by road or train - lots to do in and around city centre plus Cardiff bay ! Good choice of restaurants shopping centre - also the museum and castle are in the town centre and worth a visit

York, Bath, Cambridge, Oxford would all be on my list.

Bath! It has more museums in a square mile than any other city.
Obviously you’ve got to visit the Roman Baths. My favourite museums are the Jane Austin museum, the Royal Mint Experience, No 1 Royal Crescent and the Fashion Museum and I’d also recommend the brewery tours at the Bath Brew House. If you don’t mind heights, it’s worth climbing the Abbey tower for amazing views on a clear day. Bath Aqua Theatre of Glass is also interesting and you can watch glassblowers and stained glass artists and even have a go yourself.

I was going to say Bath too. Or Bristol is nice. Both relatively easy to get to from London.

tobee if you are interested in music venues, it might be worth coming up with a shortlist of cities and then looking to see what gigs/events are on in those places.

York, it's very beautiful. I have booked somewhere near by for our summer today this year just so I can visit again.

Cheltenham will be very busy in March as that's when the Cheltenham race meetings take place.

Brighton

I love Bath, we are going for a night in March. Staying in Premier Inn, which is very central and close to bars/restaurants. Then the next day will go to Thermae Bath Spa.. love the hot rooftop pool overlooking the city.

Norwich. So many pubs - used to be one for each day of the year but I don’t know if that’s still true.

I'd probably opt to fly to Edinburgh. Failing that Bath

Newcastle/Gateshead has a number of venues. If you like classical there is the Sage or the O2 arena. The Tyneside cinema is a “proper” cinema - great leg room and a mix of films.
