We're hiring a campervan for a week in August starting and finishing in Swansea with DC 12 and 9. Probably won't bother with Gower as fairly familiar with that. Don't know Wales outside of that at all!

Need rainy day options and some outdoorsy things - cant do cycling or anything remotely scary as DS hates all that, but we love kayaking and walks. And we're quite keen on mountains (unless scary) and castles and beaches. And the odd museum. And FOOD!!!

Any suggestions gratefully received!

A week isn't that long. You must know Swansea and Mumbles pretty well if your in-laws live there. I'd head out into Pembrokeshire - start at Tenby and head up to St David's which has a lovely surfy vibe and loads of campsites. We were pleasantly surprised by Aberteifi / Cardigan which proved a lot trendier than its name would suggest! The Ceredigion coast is stunning too and you can't beat lovely Aberystwyth. You must see the red kites being fed at Nant Yr Arian reserve - a wonder of nature. Then I'd head back inland and drive cross-country to get back to Swansea, through Rhyader and Llandrindod Wells and over the Brecon Beacons, stopping if you have time to spare. That will easily fill a week. You'll find plenty to do and plenty to eat along the way.
And then maybe repeat the holiday around north Wales next summer?!

Crib Goch route up Snowdon is brilliant.

OP said not scary. Crib Goch does not fit this criterion.

I second Pembrokeshire. Bosherston and solva are beautiful. Also newgale beach is my favourite beach in the world.
Right - I'm off to book a holiday in Wales!!

Oh these ideas are amazing! Yes huge Harry Potter and wildlife fans so some perfect suggestions.

I guess Wales is bigger than I thought - we were hoping to get up into North Wales but maybe that is unrealistic in a week?

Definitely do Caldey Island. I didn’t think my kids would love it but they did and they still go on about it.

Food wise, Ultracomedia in Narbeth and Coast and Mulberry in Saundersfoot (you can also hire paddle boards underneath Coast).

I’d definitely visit Manor Wildlife Park (it’s the Anna Ryder Richardson farm). It’s such a beautiful park, especially if you have good weather. Heatherton is also just across the road and that’s a good few hours out - you buy tokens so you can just do a few bits. The crazy golf is cheap and fun, as is the zip wire and water cannons (when the weather is good).

If you get as far as Snowdon, the trip up is well worth it. If you decide on the train to the summit book early.

There is a campsite on Shell Island which is a very pretty place, to the south of Harlech.

A beautiful drive is from Dolgellau down the Mawddach Estuary to Barmouth, quite a few campsites in the Barmouth area.

A wonderful drive/walk is from Llanbedr along the valley of the Afon Artro to Llyn Cwm Bychan with walks in the hills behind the lake. The area has stunning scenery and was the site for filming of Zulu! If you look at the film stills you can see the type of rugged scenery.

You should definitely try to get yourselves up to Snowdonia/Anglesey. Tons to do/see/explore.
