Holiday for 6,7 year olds (one with autism) on Yorkshire coast?

Living in Manchester and I’m a lone parent. I want to take the kids away and am thinking filey/Scarborough or somewhere? I’m not English so not au fait. I want to go in August. I would like to let kids see their cousin’s birthday in Doncaster in August. I would also like to take them some nice places and actively entertain them. DS1 has additional needs and can be hard work and it’s best if we are actively engaged in things to do. He is also a runner and can bolt and disappear. He likes museums and likes lego/minecraft. He won’t be prepared to sit nicely while mummy sits in a restaurant or indulges in adult pursuits. I need to actively entertain him and give him breaks to calm down. I’ve also got a six year old daughter. Any ideas for a place where there are lots of day trips? DS wakes me up in the night so I don’t want to drive too far most days.

I would love a holiday cottage with a garden so I can hem him in. And also he will want baths only. Showers are the work of the devil, apparently. And nearby supermarkets because going shopping is a complete nightmare! He does a runner.

The cottages at Keld Head Farm share a large enclosed garden with swings, slide, climbing frame, roundabout and sandpit. There's also an area for football & badminton, play shed with toy cars etc..., and an indoor games room. The farm is 15 minutes walk from Pickering which has a good indoor pool and a steam Railway. It's less than 10 minutes drive from Flamingo Land (theme park and zoo), 15 minute drive from Dalby Forest (bike hire, 2 play areas, cafe, themed activity trail) and half an hour from Whitby and Scarborough. Groceries can be ordered prior to arrival.

Best beach for dc is Saltburn. Its large, has a playpark opposite, apart from access to the carpark its pedestrianised and its really quiet.

Does to be Yorkshire? From what you said the lake district might be perfect.

Thank you. RiceKrispie, that place sounds fantastic. Cherries, someone had told me the LD was mostly for adult walkers! Phillipa, thank you- I will look into that!

LD is full of kids if you go at that time of year. So many kids orientated activities. Take a look on the website. We take my young neices and nephews every year.

Cherries - which website and is there a particular place you go? I often find that because my child has autism, I cannot go where the other families can.

My DC slept so well when we went because they had so much fresh air and exercise.
Pickering Swimming Pool has a flume and a pirate-themed inflatable assault course. Look up their swimming timetable nearer the time to see when their family fun sessions are. They usually have about two of these sessions a day.
When we went, there was a Highway Rat themed trail at Dalby Forest. They also have children's bikes to hire and adults bikes with tag-alongs for kids.
The Whitby regatta is on in August so check if it's on when you're going. If it is, it's quite fun to watch and there's lots of entertainment. You can catch the steam train from Pickering to Whitby which is an experience in itself.
Have a great time.
