Birthday trip to York - your restaurant suggestions please

Hi
I'm being taken on a birthday treat to York for a couple of nights in early March. Any ideas for a restaurant? MN came up trumps suggesting El Gato Negro in Manchester a while back. A similar sort of chilled , good food, not too foofy sort of place .
Any ideas/suggestions?

Gusto, really lovely food and a nice atmosphere. I went for a birthday meal with dh when we stayed in York last May.

The whippet inn is great for good quality steak type meals and excellent wine. Ambiente is a wonderful family run tapas place (I like the one on Goodramgate but the Fossgate one is also good I hear).

Lovely, thanks!

The blue bicycle if it's still going it's lovely been a few times - just read it's closed due to flooding but may be open come March x

Meltons is really good food - never had a disappointing meal there - or Melton’s Too for a more bar like place.

MummaGiles · 08/01/2019 17:58

Star Inn the City. The new kitchens should be completed by then.

VamillaSugar · 08/01/2019 18:03

LOVE Melton’s 1&2!

Have a look at Cafe Number 8 which is in Gillygate. It’s popular, so you’ll have to book.

A good Italian place is near the station end of Micklegate/Blossom Street. It’s called Del Rio’s.

Cote for French food.

The Star Inn The City which is underneath Lendal Bridge. Its rural sister is infamous in Yorkshire.

You must also go to The Yorkshire Soap shop which is between the theatre and Betty’s (don’t got to Betty’s, please!) for soap cake. Yes, it’s soap in the shape of a cake.

Have fun!

I think that’s supposed to be Plunkett’s GrinGrinGrin - down Petergate near the Minster.

userblablabla · 08/01/2019 19:17

Plonkers is a thing too

bakingcupcakes · 08/01/2019 19:17

I think plunketts has gone now. I used to like it in there.

DarcieStarlight · 08/01/2019 19:17

I live in York and can recommend some lovely places for casual or evening meals.

Las Iguanas
The Ivy
Lucia's
Cotés
Ate O'Clock
The Go Down Restaurant
Piccolinos
Khao San Road

They are all smack bang in the centre of town with plenty of bars around to enjoy afterwards.

ChorleyFMcominginyourears · 08/01/2019 19:19

Cosmo's, I believe it's changed it's name now though!

bringmelaughter · 08/01/2019 19:26

The rattle owl on micklegate is just lovely. Skosh is also a few doors up and is as good as it’s reputation but you need to book way in advance.

FloralTeacup · 08/01/2019 19:28

That was definitely Plonkers - had the nicest burger there. Oh, and I would go there just for a vodka lemonade, that lemonade is best I’ve come across. As far as lemonade goes...

VamillaSugar · 08/01/2019 19:28

Nooooooooooo! What happened to Plunkett’s???????

It was a York institution. And who calls a restaurant Plonkers? Has it got a Delboy theme?

bringmelaughter · 08/01/2019 19:32

Plunkets became the eagle and child which is nice enough but preferred it before. Not sure what happened to plonkers.

DarcieStarlight · 08/01/2019 19:51

Plonkers is still there. Nice little bar to go to after the theatre. It's not themed around Del Boy 😂 it's very nice and some would say quite posh! Tiny though, probably about 30 seats in total.

April2020mom · 08/01/2019 22:25

If you prefer a tearoom I recommend Bettys Cafe. When we were in Harrogate we went there for afternoon tea once. The views are lovely and the staff are very helpful and polite too. The tea and cakes are delicious. Recommended. Oh and it is definitely good for large parties of people.
