Hi, just after a recommendation of which area to stay when on a few days visit to Edinburgh.
2 Dc (15,12) with me. Flying in late one evening and flying out early morning when we leave So maybe base ourselves the right side of the city for easy access to the airport
And want to be within easy walking distance of the city

Don't know your budget, but there are loads of hotels in the city centre. And a rather brilliant hostel (backpackers) right next to the castle.

Mookie81 · 05/01/2019 15:14

I've booked the Waldorf Astoria near the castle.
Looks lovely online, higher end though.
Sorry to derail, can anyone tell me if that's a good hotel?

I quite fancy an apartment type thing. So just recommendations of areas would be very helpful

Which sort of areas would be fine to walk to & from after a meal in the city type scenario

I would look for apartments on the Royal Mile, in the West End/ Lothian Road area, or maybe Stockbridge.

I have stayed in this apartment for a couple of days last year - Hillside Street Luxury Apartment. An easy walk to/from restaurants.

Thank you. I shall check those out

indigo hotel is great, right opposite the bit where the Christmas market usually is, easy walk
To shops, restaurants, castle and royal mile and can get the tram straight to the airport and back from a stop around the corner

If you're looking for an apartment Stockbridge is the right side of the city for the airport, a 5 minute walk to the centre and has a lovely little village feel with cafes, restaurants and little independent shops.
Corstorphine and Murrayfield are closer to the airport and price wise will be less as they're not quite city centre but you'll need to get a bus into the city, it takes 10-15 mins and the busses from these areas are really good and regular.
Haymarket is another good place to look for apartments, you can get the tram straight to and from the airport and it's more or less at the west end of the city centre.

What about Carlton Rd? Found a nice looking place. Is that good walking distance? Says about a mile to all of the tourist attractions

Wrong side of the city for the airport, but central enough that it doesn't matter. Walkable as long as you're all fit, it's a lovely stroll in good weather.
If you're going to be staying over a weekend, check there are no demonstrations / marches planned for the Saturday. Carlton Road is the usual start point.

We got a lovely Georgian Airbnb in New Town but walking distance to Old Town. It was the perfect location. Thistle St specifically, but there were plenty in that area.

No, a mid week stay. Love those nuggets of info tho! ( I'd probably be more than up for joining a demo!!)

If you're not dead set on an apartment, I'd recommend the Premier Inn on York Place - 5 mins walk to the centre, and right opposite the tram stop for getting to/from to the airport. There are aparthotels further along that street but I think they're pricey.

Rubytinsleslippers · 05/01/2019 17:02

Tram is fab and very easy. £8:50 for a family day pass ( for 2 adults, 2 kids ). Goes right to airport. We hopped on / off all day.

gracielooloo · 06/01/2019 18:50

There’s a Novotel and a Premier Inn at Edinburgh Park, 20 mins to Princes St in one direction and straight to the airport in the other on the tram.

Be aware, the walk To/From Royal mile is not a lovely stroll. It is up some of the steepest hills in the city. Equally, the mile itself is really steep so don’t just look at the map and think that’s easy!

Haymarket / West End would be a good base. There is a tram which goes right to the airport. It does depend on your budget really, and when you are travelling. Chester Residences get a good write up. There is also an Apex hotel at Haymarket, you probably don’t want to go any further out than that. There’s a bunch of other hotels in that area too.
