Should I book a cottage for a week in March in Scotland?

Yes I know the weather will probably be crap. Dp and I like to sit in front of the fire, read the newspaper, drink wine, cook together. Maybe go and explore some local towns, go for a walk.

We were planning on going abroad, but only have a week and it must be a specific week due to work, and so long haul for warmth seems a bit of a waste. We may as well explore a part of the country not explored by us before.

Therefore... would I be crazy to go book a cottage for a week in march. We'd go for a small farmhouse/cottage type with lots of character.

Yes! but Scotland is a big place, just choose wisely. The East coast is generally dryer.

Depends where you want to go and how much you want to travel! We have beautiful Highlands and Islands, and countryside and seaside! Where are you?

Not crazy at all!

We have stayed here before

And while not quite Scotland, Kielder has quite a bit about it and we have also stayed in the bothy here which has a great log burner

I live in central Scotland and last end of Feb and beginning of March we had awful snow. so much so the shops ran out of bread and milk for several days. I specifically remember as I had a baby and came home and was snowed in for 5 days and the midwife couldn't get in! it was quite exceptional weather but folklaw says they come in 2s. I would choose somewhere further south at that time of year if I were you.

Yes it's the most beautiful place on earth regardless of weather

Thanks for the replies! I'll be sure to check out those links now. We're living in Bristol at the moment. I've only ever been to Edinburgh and St Andrews in Scotland, dp is half Scottish, so I'm not fussy where we go, just not those two places! Luckily for me, dp likes to drive, although we don't have a 4x4 so should hope no snow.

Seconding the snow issue, end Feb / beg March is by far the worst time for it. East coast, as long as you're not too far north, would be "safer" than the west.

Snow always worse end of feb and into March. However, there are lots of accessible areas! Find a nice cottage with hot tub / wood burner. Perfection!

Mistressiggi · 04/01/2019 22:17

Yes it’s the craziest idea ever. In fact all Scottish people leave the country between December and May every year as it’s too crazy to live there.
You’ll have a great holiday

North west highlands it’s fab

LittleMissNaice · 04/01/2019 22:23

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 07/01/2019 14:38

it will be fine. Everywhere will have shit weather in March so you may as well go to Scotland.

Port Patrick, Pitlochry, Callendar, North Berwick, Elie, Fort Augustus, Loch Lomond (Lomond Arms Hotel)

Aprilshowerswontbelong · 10/01/2019 20:07

Invest in some winter tyres and your car will be as good as a 4x4.
All of Scotland is fab!!
