Hi we are looking for recommendations for a weekend break with activities around in Dumfries and Galloway area, preferably by the coast, have heard it's relatively unspoilt, can any one suggest anywhere please?

It's been very "Scottish" here in South Yorkshire today.

We had a lovely holiday in a self catering cottage in Sandyhills a few years ago. One of the most interesting day trips we did was to the Museum of Lead Mining at Wanlockhead, which is the highest village in Scotland.

Kirkcudbright is absolutely beautiful and a centre for arts and crafts, lots of lovely beaches and hillwalks nearby, and there's the chocolate factory (Cocoa Bean) or the David Coulthard exhibition for rainy days.

You can go over to Belfast for the day for £5 person from Cairnryan which is a good day out.

We have stayed at the mull of galloway lighthouse cottages. www.lighthouseholidaycottages.co.uk/ Fab location. Wigtown is great for tea & cake in the bookshops. We did canoeing but can't remember the name. Good for dark skies if any interest in astronomy.

Maybe try camping at Brighouse Bay it’s a massive site and a great base to explore the area. Lots of lovely walk, scenery and activities in the surrounding areas.

Kirkcudbright is perfect!

How about visiting us! Near Stranraer... both properties have a private hot tub! Www.glengyre.co.uk

I was coming on to recommend Loch Ken too. I've done activities there with teenagers. Mine particularly enjoyed the sailing and windsurfing.

We camped up there this summer, it was glorious (the weather wasn't at all Scottish). We drove past Loch Ken, it looked lovely too with lots to do.

This is the third “isn’t Scottish weather shite” thread I’ve read today, getting a bit fed up with it. You don’t get amazing greenery without rain, but you need sun too, which there is plenty of! Have had a really mild Christmas this year too.
