Hi all.

Could you please let me know what science books are used at schools (which publishers)?

Thanks in advance.

Some schools don’t use any, some ask for the kids to use revision guides. Some will follow an exam board scheme of work or use certain approved textbooks.

It’s basically like asking how long is a piece of string.

Thanks for your clarification. I am looking for 'certain approved textbooks' then. Could you please let me know what books (publishers) are used in the UK? Blush

Very difficult question to answer. For example we currently use this for year 10. But it will depend on which exam board the children are sitting their GCSEs with and preference will vary from school to school.

AQA GCSE (9-1) Combined Science Trilogy Student Book 1 https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/1471851354/ref=cmswwrcppapi_Cpi8Bb1WNFC11

Most schools don't use textbooks these days as they don't have the funds. When DD was doing GCSEs and A levels we bought the CGP revision guides.

You need to know which exam board you need books for as each exam board has a slightly different syllabus.

AlexanderHamilton · 17/11/2018 23:18

Are you talking about GCSE? If so you need to know which exam board then you can go into their website to see what resources they recconend.
If you are talking Primary or Key Stage 3 there are no approved texts as such.

Every school uses different books, and depends which exam board etc.
Why don't you ask your child's school?

Thank you all. I am talking about books that are used before GCSE. I am not talking about revision guides. I know that I can go the exam board website and check their recommendations. I am not in the UK now so I can't ask the school. Everyone says that there are no books but when I ask more and more that I can hear from mothers: 'Yes, I have bought books that they use there"... Sad

"Thank you all. I am talking about books that are used before GCSE"

They aren't, or not in state schools. They just don't have the funding to provide text books these days. All of DD's reading was on the school's VLE (online), which consisted of homework worksheets and revision guides.

AlexanderHamilton · 18/11/2018 11:13

Some individual schools will choose to use textbooks st Key Stage 3 or more commonly an online version. When Ds was at a private school his school used a scheme of work called Activate science that came with online textbooks.

Dds school used a completely different scheme.

It is completely individual choice by each school.

Are your children in an English school? Or in an English medium school abroad?
Email their school and ask which they use... but be prepared that some schools don't use any, some do use them but the publisher won't sell to the public, some will tell you openly and you can buy them.
All schools are different.

It is completely individual choice by each school.

And varies by departments within each school. At our son's school, the Geography dept used paper text books, the history dept used online versions, the Chemistry dept used home-made power points and worksheets, the Physics dept provided CGP books. It's up to each subject dept/head to choose how to use their budgets and what resources to provide.

mmnnbbvvccxxzz · 19/11/2018 22:25

Thanks Badbadbunny. It's really easy to find relevant books in America. I suppose that it's harder to get that from people/shops in the UK... I will keep searching...

I know nothing about the America system, it sounds like education is standardised so everyone is doing the same thing. Unfortunately, in the UK, there is no standardisation, so individual schools, and even individual teachers within schools do their own thing - some will create their own worksheets, others will use a textbook, some use online resources, etc. It's one thing I've really found puzzling as not only does it create difficulties buying books etc as you've found, but it must also be a massive waste of effort when you have hundreds or thousands of separate teachers doing their own thing and spending time making their own resources.

As others have said it varies but this is generally a good brand.
