Accommodation you have to hike to - is there such a thing?!

Hello, I am looking for something a bit off the beaten track... I have 3 outdoorsy boys (4/7/9) and would like to take them on a bit of an adventure. Does anyone know of any accommodation you have to walk to with back packs? I was thinking somewhere with an open fire etc. (Google hasn’t come up with anything)

Alternatively does anyone know where to hire a camper van that sleeps 5 and where I could take them??

Thank you

Another vote for walking Hadrians Wall. Currently doing the Cotswold way a few days at a time - usually with two overnight stays per chunk. Lots of log fires at this time of year!

Have sent you a PM op.

Wilderhope Manor Youth Hostel in Shropshire is fantastic and there are other youth hostels in reasonable distance for hiking to.

Wilderhope is beautiful with roaring fires, locally sourced food and fantastic views.

www.wildernesscottages.co.uk/property.php?id=104 you can probably get a car to these cottages but some of them are pretty remote

Black Sail looks amazing!

I came on here to suggest Corrour/Loch Ossian youth hostel and see I've been beaten to it. You get the train to Corrour station (on the Caledonian Sleeper if you're coming from far enough away) and then walk a mile to the youth hostel along a track - there are no proper roads.

I haven't stayed there but I have done the walk past it from Corrour Station and back down to Rannoch and it is fantastically isolated.

Snowdon Ranger youth hostel. You can drive to it but you can also walk down snowdon straight in to it.

I also cycled between three youth hostels in Yorkshire in a triangle bit my dad walked with my younger sister. They were in a triangle to make it easier for getting there. It was malham , stainforth and ...somewhere else...

Another vote for Black Sail. There is an easy but rather dull walk up a track on the way in, for when you are carrying all your gear. But once you are there, the rambling about potential is huge. It’s a very special place.

Walking part of Offas Dyke. Many of the hotels along the route arrange to take your baggage ahead to the next stop off. You can make the hikes as long as you like depending which part of the route you want to do.

Shockers · 12/11/2018 16:32

There are wild ponies on Offas Dyke too!

PotteringAlong · 12/11/2018 16:35

Slightly different, but you can walk the coast to coast route (or part of it) and there’s lots of accommodation you can stop off on the way.

Barnhill, the home of George Orwell, on the island of Jura is a 4 mile hike. Very remote and isolated. Be sure to take enough food and calpol with you!!

If you need any asistance on a future trip in Spain and walk the St James Way, you can contact a very interesting company that offers backpack transfer between all the citys. I let you his offer:

Go to La Rosa campsite on North York Moors. You can hike from the steam railway that comes from Whitby. Tiny pub nearby too. It is off grid but has starlit bath outside and swallows in the shower barn. Retro themed caravans and a gypsy fortune teller's hut with a drop loo inside. Also a big top full of dress up clothes. Think towels etc. provided.
La rosa hotel in Whitby (same owners) might also be a good combo. Beach is amazing and fun arcade too. Have fun!
Also maybe South Downs: Alfriston or Rushlake Green with some glamping and some B&B action? Maybe end ip at Eastbourne? Nice walking and safe

MarmiteTermite · 20/12/2018 17:19

I was also going to suggest Lundy!
