London trip

Hi - I will be visiting London with my family in February and a bit bewildered by the choice of accommodation 🤯

I was initially looking at apartments as we’re a family of 5 so would need 2 hotel rooms. However, now thinking a hotel might be a safer option since I don’t know which are the nicer/safer street areas.
Have seen premier inn county hall and premier inn Blackfriars. Has anyone got any experience of these - are these good areas? Would be nice to be able to walk to some attractions although I know that won’t be possible for all.

As another family of 5,I always used sleep5.com for London hotels.

Blackfriars is fine, unexciting, won't be very active during the weekend (in a dead city way, not calm leafy suburban kind of way)

dellacucina · 03/11/2018 22:45

Oops, I thought that they were both at Blackfriars. The Premier Inn is in an area that is probably safe enough, but maybe desolate at night. It is right by an area that is very, very, very crowded with tourists in the day.

I’d be much more inclined to look at eg Airbnb with 5 of you. Hotel rooms are so restrictive & boring.

Which attractions are you interested in?

dellacucina · 03/11/2018 22:46

(Premier Inn County Hall - sorry for all the PSs)

I have stayed in the County Hall Premier Inn and the location is brilliant - right on the river next to the London Eye & Houses of Parliament, and then just walk along the riverbank for lots more - St Paul’s, Tate Modern, The Globe, Tower Bridge etc. Loads of places to eat nearby too.

GiantKitten · 03/11/2018 22:54

I’d stay somewhere like this:

www.airbnb.co.uk/rooms/10749542?location=London&adults=3&children=2&home_collection=1&s=BxZRZveV&guests=5

Lots of public transport, restaurants etc in the vicinity, & space & activities for the kids indoors. Maybe more expensive than premier inn but much nicer!

The Premier Inn County Hall is practically next to the London Eye and a short walk to the South Bank complex. The Thames Clipper boats depart from a stop nearby. It's also very well-connected indeed for other transport (Waterloo station and underground round the corner, convenient buses including the RV1 to Covent Garden, etc etc) but, as previously said, it'll be busy and touristy. It's very central though.

Blackfriars is a bit less in the middle of the action but it's not far from St Paul's Cathedral and again, transport connections are very good. It would be quieter there, though.

The usual attractions - London Eye, trip up Thames, Buckingham Palace, bit of shopping. We’re going to emirates but will travel out there don’t want to be based there.
We never usually use hotels but couldn’t find any affordable apartments in as good locations as the premier inns as I’d like to be able to walk at least some of the time. Kids are older will be 11,14 and 16 so a bit further to walk not an issue.
Unfortunately the one you listed kitten isn’t available when we go but I’ll take another look at apartments. Which areas are best - had initially been looking at Kensington.

To be honest, the County Hall Premier Inn would be ideally located for reaching the attractions you want to see. It's just not very picturesque or exciting in that exact position.

canihaveanap · 04/11/2018 09:14

We stayed in a premier inn on London Bridge.
I know it's naughty but we used one that had a self check in and booked a family room for 4 - double bed and two kids beds.
We're a family of 5 but the youngest happily slept inbetween us (the beds are massive) she was 2 at the time.
It saved us a fortune!

LittleBearPad · 04/11/2018 09:17

County Hall Premier Inn will be ideally located for what you want to do. The Blackfriars one is in a totally fine location but in the City so going to be quieter at weekends. It is very close to St Paul’s.

HoleyCoMoley · 05/11/2018 19:14

Are you driving down or getting the train. P.i. county hall is very near waterloo station.id choose that if you can, you could request a quiet room which overlooks the piazza. It's really central, like others have said within walking distance of loads of attractions and excellent bus and tube routes. Which Emirates are you visiting.

HoleyCoMoley · 05/11/2018 19:19

Kids under 16 eat breakfast for free at premier inns

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 05/11/2018 19:36

Premier Inn County Hall will be a perfect location for you.

If you book one double room and one family room, the dc will get a bigger room with a bed and a sofa bed (you'd need to book it as a family room with one adult and two children, and then a double room with one adult and one child - but they won't care how you then arrange who sleeps in the two rooms!).

P Inn breakfasts are really good, so you can all fill up at breakfast and then either not need lunch at all, or just a snack, and save money.
