Christmas in Edinburgh

Can anyone recommend somewhere lovely to have lunch in Edinburgh on Christmas Day? We don't have an unlimited budget but prepared to spend a bit extra for something special. Just 2 adults.

The Ivy on St Andrew Sq, largely for its location, very central, nice and buzzy. Ice rink in the gardens, food stalls etc there too. Perhaps the restaurant at Harvey Nichols, on the other side of the square. I suspect the Sheep's Heid might have been a joke.

It's out of the city, but Greywamls just outside Gullane is amazing at Christmas!

Don’t think the Sheep’s Heid would be a joke - if it’s good enough for Her Maj, I’m sure it’s good enough for the OP. It’s a bit out of the town centre though which would rule it out for me.

Doubt it would be a joke. It’s lovely and cosy.

Can’t think where to recommend as think it’s mostly only hotels who open Christmas Day. Suspect many above would be closed as is the Christmas market/ice rink etc,

On second thoughts, rhubarb, if they have space.

If there are only Hotel restaurants open then The Balmoral restaurant is lovely and in the centre of town

I couldn't resist looking at Rhubarb's Christmas Day offering - you should definitely go there. The dining room is beautiful even without Christmas decorations, as is the rest of the building, and the service and food are amazing.

I see what you mean about the Sheep's Heid. It's changed from my recollection of it, that's for sure.

I agree Midsomer, I did a double take at the Sheep's Heid. I wonder when that happened. Similarly the Canny Man,while still pretty much a junk shop, is now a clean junk shop with nice food.

Thanks everyone! Rhubarb looks lovely. Although I think we may have talked ourselves into going for an Indian now. Definitely not a fan of "hotel" Christmas lunches. Last one I had (also in Edinburgh) was one of the least nice Christmas lunches I have ever had We don't live in the UK so an Indian meal is a proper, proper treat....just don't tell the Christmas police Any Indian restaurant recommendations anyone?

@Frosty66611 That looks absolutely amazing. Sadly it doesn't look like they are open on Christmas Day, but I think we are going to have to fit in one of their breakfasts somehow even though we get breakfast at our hotel I do like a challenge.

That’s a shame as the food is amazing there. Hopefully you can go another day. Khushis is open on Xmas day (it’s in the Leith Walk area so you could walk there from the centre of town). Food has been really nice whenever I’ve been.
The Clay Oven in Morningside is really good too and also open on Xmas day. You would have to taxi/drive from town though (it’s about a 10 min journey from Princes St)

Just been told by my partner that The Clay Oven has gone down hill since I last went a year ago so maybe discount that suggestion. Kushis is definitely still good though as was there recently

Thanks Frosty! We are only there for 3 nights - have a restaurant booked for the Sunday night, lunch with relatives in Glasgow on Christmas Eve and we fly back home on Boxing Day. Just working out how to fit in an "extra" breakfast So many restaurants, so little time...........

The Bombay Bicycle Shop has been well regarded for a long time, also Mother India Cafe, which I assume is related to Mother India in Glasgow, which is brilliant.
