Recommendations for Edinburgh hotels and restaurants

DH and I are planning our 1st night away from DD (now 3!) and are going to Edinburgh. Anyone got some good hotel recommendations (no more than £150/night, preferably less) and good restaurants - somewhere where you can easily spend three hours over lovely food.

Not sure how much The Balmoral costs per night now, but dh and I spent our wedding night there and very nice it was too! Right at the end of Princes St.

How much would you be prepared to spend on a meal?

DrNortherner · 05/06/2007 16:38

Agree the Balmoral is one of my fave hotels in the UK. We stayed there last year and went to teyh big firework display on princes st to mark the end of the festival. It was amazing. The brasserie there (Hadrian's) is fab too.

Think The Carlton Hotel is reasonably priced as is Royal Terrace and The Hilton.

the mildmannered janitor has a similar thread running

Ulysees · 05/06/2007 16:39

newkid you could ring the balmoral and ask if they'll do you a deal?

Will the balmoral do just one night though? Don't some have a 2 night only policy?

TheApprentice · 05/06/2007 16:42

Agree with Bookthief on the other thread, Stac Poly restuarant is fab! But expensive. Used to love Hadrians at The Balmoral but was disappointed last time we went. Perhaps it was just a one off?

If you like vegetarian David Banns is good

TheApprentice · 05/06/2007 16:43

Ulysees, Balmoral did one night for us on our wedding night. And it was Valentine's day!

Ulysees · 05/06/2007 16:44

that's good then I've stayed at the hilton with a castle view and that was nice, around £150 a night but no breakfast.

newkid · 05/06/2007 16:45

Thanks for suggestions so far. Had just found the other thread and am going to look into Channings. Am a veggie so David Bann is a possibility but I also like the look of the Tower. On a meal, would pay up to £50 each (we like our food!)

Ooh yes, I've been to The Tower too and it was really nice. Was only lunchtime though.

newkid · 05/06/2007 17:01

The Channing looks really good - would welcome any reviews?

I always use tripadvisor

rookiemum · 05/06/2007 19:10

If you are a veggie you HAVE to go to Banns, they are very child friendly and they have the most wonderful chocolate souffle in the world ever, I'm dribbling just thinking about it.

The Tower is nice but very expensive, and not very child friendly.

chevre · 05/06/2007 19:13

my aunt and uncle used to stay at channings, seemed nice enough and in a lovely part of town. malmaison in leith is v. 'boutique' and surrounded by lots of lovely restaurants and bars.

Lilliput · 05/06/2007 19:20

Dh and I stayed at Channings on Sunday night and it was really lovely. The room we had was nice but there were probably newer more stylish rooms in the hotel. Saying that the bed was big, the bath was roll top and the shower was a rain shower. The room was at the back of the hotel so it was really quiet,no traffic noise at all. The lounge and bar downstairs was really great and we ate in the restaurant which was pretty good too. Our room which was a standard double was £140 for the night but I think you can get better deals than that.

newkid · 12/06/2007 09:53

Thanks for the tips. I wasn't sure about Banns but chocolate souffle sounds like my kind of pud!!! Child friendly not really an issue as DD will be with her grandparents Will book Channings now and see if I can get a deal.
