Where to go around Newport Pembrokeshire

I’m off to Newport next week for the first time with my 2 boys 15 and 11. We’re staying at the youth hostel. It would be great to hear from people who know the area. What are good things to do round there? There’s the beach although weather won’t be great. I’ve read there’s also a little Stonehenge nearby. Any recommendations gratefully received.

Castell Henllys is the Iron Age Fort . Worth a visit. www.pembrokeshirecoast.wales/default.asp?PID=261isit.
Plenty of beaches not too far if you want a change from Trefdraeth/Newport- Poppit Sands, Mwnt, Tresaith. Get some wetsuits and the boys will be fine!!

We've just come back from Poppit Sands. It's a beautiful area. Poppit Sands beach and Tresaith beach are both well worth a visit. Get body boards and wet suits. Newquay is a bit further but you may well see Dolphins in the harbour there. The best crabbing place I've ever been to is in St Dogmaels (about half an hour from newport) on a jetty just down from the Ferry Inn.

Cardigan town is nice; there's a brilliant sweet shop and the toy shop has loads of Lego. I think there's a swimming pool there too.

We had Sunday lunch in the Golden Lion at Newport. I would highly recommend it.

Have a wonderful holiday!

Sorry just seen your boys are probably too old for Lego! They might like the saltrock shop in Cardigan instead.

Thanks both. We're on the train , journey seems to take for ever! Next stop is Fishguard then bus to Newport. We'll try the golden lion for Sunday lunch.

Sorry about the hurried post from the train. Here’s a little report back.
I loved Newport as it was so pretty, compact with independent shops. Clean air and a beautiful beach. We stayed at the youth hostel and did a mix of cooking in and eating out, at the Castle Inn pub ( because it had free WiFi Blush ) and the Canteen a nice pizza and pasta place. The weather wasn’t with us for swimming and I didn’t go for wetsuits due to the outlay. We did lots of walks along the Pembrokeshire coast trail from Newport which was really beautiful. Also went to Pentre Ifan burial chambers ( a small Stonehenge) which was great as there is free access and you can go right up to it. Had a disappointing day trying to get to the cardigan bay regatta on public transport. We took the bus to Cardigan only to be told it was a 45 minute drive up the coast in Newquay
I’d like to go back, but maybe take a car next time to be able to see more.
