We stayed in Salcombe last year and visited Hope cove. It has a lovely beach and there are a few pub/restaurants there which were good. We also liked Bigbury sands - good sand for dam building and you can get a tractor ride over to Burgh island. We had a day in Dartmouth and the boys really enjoyed the boat trip to Dartmouth castle. There was also a steam train from Totnes which they enjoyed. Have you been to that part of Devon before? Salcome itself is lovely and well worth a visit.

Dogsby · 03/06/2007 14:37

yes htats it
sorry holidays confused
there was a modern one at thetop f the hill

Smurfs · 03/06/2007 14:41

Thank you Chamomile

that sounds great, I think we will do all of those things as DS & DD would adore them. I haven't been to Devon before but DH family went for many years however that was 25 years ago and it has changed a little since then. Salcombe is definately on the list as it is so close.

Thanks again.

Who's going to be doing the driving?

We are used to Cornish lanes but the South Devon ones can be even narrower!

Smurfs · 03/06/2007 14:51

DH probably whilst I flick through a copy of some highbrow magazine like Hello and DC sleep peacefully in the back...reality will be DH will have a larger glass of wine than is allowed with lunch after we stopped to escape the hideous traffic jam/queues, children will not have slept a wink on the 7 hour journey down and the only bit of food within reach without stopping and unpacking the entire car will be fully loaded chocolate buttons....aaaaargh I am going for a lie down now at that thought

Harbour Light, Hope Cove, Kingsbridge, TQ7 3HQ

think that was it

quadrophenia · 03/06/2007 16:10

hope cove is lovely, we love it there. places you are near that you can visit are salcombe, Bigbury on sea and burgh island (fabulous beach), dartmouth, kingsbridge. Salcombe is a stones throw away and has lovely restaurants and pubs (although can be a bit pricey) fab beaches at North and south sands and also accross the ferry to east portlemouth. Lovely boat trips in dartmouth along the estuary. Will try and think og more

Lilymaid · 03/06/2007 16:10

No recommendations apart from fish and chip shop in Kingsbridge where we ended up getting a take away as it was impossible to get in anywhere without booking on a Saturday evening in late August.

The Sloop Inn at Bantham

A cuppa around mine

quadrophenia · 03/06/2007 16:20

ohh goosegg where do you live, I'd love to live in that part of the world

gooseegg · 03/06/2007 16:24

30 minutes inland from Kingsbridge in the South Hams on the edge of Dartmoor, but work out of Kingsbridge.

AttilaTheMum · 03/06/2007 16:24

How old are your DC's?
Morweelham Quay is good if they are school age (Victorians)
Plymouth has a great aquarium as well as Smeaton's Tower (18th century lighthouse on the Hoe)

Dartmoor's good for wide open spaces where they can run around - good for tiring them out, but you need to choose your day for the weather.

On the other side of Kingsbridge is Woodlands which is excellent & you can get to it via Slapton Sands, which is worth seeing. The beach at Slapton is actually pebbles, but there's a smaller beach called Blackpool Sands at the northern end which is very nice - lots of water sports, a good cafe,

quadrophenia · 03/06/2007 16:28

ohhh Goosegg we are down your way next week, staying in salcombe, I know one day, i will live near there, when I've won the lottery most probably!!

Morwelham quay is fab, didn't like going in the mine though!

gooseegg · 03/06/2007 18:56

I hope you enjoy your holiday quadrophenia - please don't hesitate to give me a shout if you need any evening babysitting

quadrophenia · 03/06/2007 19:02

Actually don't know if you know any vw specialists down that way do you? we are travelling down in our campervan and i always try and find a garage just in case!

oh thank you all for the suggestions and the lovely links....I have been in the garden for most of the afternoon so didn't get a chance to respond before now....DH thinks we will be sat on the beach for 2 weeks, not a chance with all this to do
