So I've had this idea ,to drive around the whole coast of the uk,stopping to camp in different places ...anyone already done this ? How many weeks do you think it would take ...

I think it depends if you want to go and visit places, and enjoy the whole experience, or if you want to do it as a sort of race.

Slimmingsnake · 12/08/2018 21:26

We have free train travel.so we have decided by train...possibly using youth hostels/ camping ...over 2 weeks...I'm really hoping others who have done this reply with ideas...

No ,not a race ,but within 2 weeks..is it doable?

I did similar but didn't manage the whole coast, more lands end to Scotland, stopping at places of interest. I think it was a month or two. We had a car, a tent, and a map!

We did the whole of the Welsh coast in two weeks. I'm not sure you'd get around the whole of the UK in two weeks.

Slimmingsnake · 12/08/2018 21:33

Tell me how long you spent in each place what's this pain..would it of worked by train, how much did it cost

Dicks dancing..how long did you stay in each place ? We were thinking one night then move on

Decide the uk in half ,down the middle on a map.each half with a pen devide in to 7ths...then that's how far we need to travel each day, then camp or youth hostels booked in advance near each train station

Well, the train doesn't go along the coast, the whole way round the UK

Slimmingsnake · 12/08/2018 21:40

Yeah ...some bits are iffy ..bus maybe

I can't even remember! If we liked somewhere we'd stay 2 or 3 nights. If the weather was bad we'd have to move on. Got a few b&b.s along the way due to bad weather or late arrival. Probably a couple of weeks in Cornwall, couple in wales, lakes, Scotland... tried to keep it cheap. A lot of the best places are extremely rural so I was glad we had a car. It was a cool road trip. Meant we didn't have to carry all our gear and had complete freedom. If we didnt like somewhere we'd just keep going. Met a lot of overseas backpackers who had various travel packages. I think some hostels minibus you around? Sorry, it was a long time ago!

Slimmingsnake · 12/08/2018 21:44

Thanks what's this pain...my first thought was to cycle round the uk...but we are taking the dog and a child ,plus time wouldn't be on our side ,im a slow cyclist...car is better than train. Definitely, but more expensive...thinking march April next year

You'll need a car or campervan would be ace. I think that's too early in the year to go, it will still be freezing. I'd go as late as possible, before the schools break up.

Whatsthispain · 12/08/2018 21:49

Why not do an edited highlights trip? Just pick a handful of destinations. Look at backpacker websites.

Slimmingsnake · 12/08/2018 21:50

I'm not good with the heat..I want to walk bits ,really stretch my legs ,and that's better when it's cold..I'd actually love to cycle the whole way round ,but I think it would take me a year at least ..

Slimmingsnake · 12/08/2018 21:52

My dh is saying that ,to just pick places and go for a few days at a time...but I feel the need to do this in one go...like test or something..

Would it not make more sense to acknowledge it will take a while, and aim to do it in 'chunks', then the next holiday, pick up from where you left off? It just seems such a shame to 'rush through' so many wonderful places, because you are trying to 'get to the next place' rather than enjoying what you see whilst you are there. Perhaps do Wales one month, then from Bristol right round through Devon and Cornwall to wherever you get on the South coast the next. The Dorset or Hampshire all round the SE to East Anglia or wherever that takes you, etc.,etc, and actually have enough time to enjoy a sunset of visiting a castle or going up a lighthouse or whatever ?

2ManyDicksOnTheDancefloor · 13/08/2018 10:18

We did 2-3 nights in each place but explored around each area in that time. We did it in our camper van. We've also done the whole of the Cornish coast and most of the Dorset coast in our van. I don't see much point in rushing it, we've taken two weeks to do each stretch of the coast.
