Scottish Islands

We're thinking on holidaying on one of the Scottish Islands next year but unsure which. Distance isn't an issue, we'd be driving and would plan stop overs if necessary.

Holiday is for DH and I, our 6 year old and my 79 year old Mum who is fit and active. We don't need masses of entertainment for ds, we find him more content with a park, his bike or a bucket and spade. My Mum would be happy anywhere and would suit herself whether she wanted to rest or take part.

I've seen some accommodation on the Isle of Bute and the surrounding area looks lovely. We've been all over Scotland but never the Islands.

I wondered if anyone had any recommendations or where would suit all of our needs and/or any accommodation recommendations too.

We have just come back from Mull and stayed in Tobermory. The island is beautiful but we didn't enjoy driving on the single track roads. The drive from Tobermory to Calgary was stunning but a bit hairy. Do all the islands have mainly single-track roads?

MrsBartlet it will be mostly single track roads on the islands and in many rural areas of Scotland. It can be a bit hairy (mostly due to other drivers!)

It's hard to avoid single track roads in Scotland, take your time and pull in to let local people past and you'll be fine. If someone is up close, its generally not aggressive just a local wanting past.

Another vote for Tiree - hardly anyone. Hardly anything except beaches and nature.
Went there as a child and had a whole beach to myself everyday.

Thanks all. We did a week in the Cairngorms before our week on Mull and it was all amazing. I have started planning for next year and I'm thinking maybe a week in the Trossachs and then either another island or somewhere on the west coast. We will just have to get used to the single track roads!
