Glasgow

I live in France and am attending the open day at Glasgow University in October with DS1 who is hoping for a place in Sept 2020. We'll fly into Edinburgh and get the train into Glasgow station. Would anyone who knows the city well be able to recommend somewhere not too far from the University and the train station we could stay? Rough area and or actual hotel would be great! Neither of us have visited Glasgow - or Scotland before! We're super excited, and really want to make the most of it. tia Smile

Hopefully people won't misinterpret "rough area" :). You could end up having a very interesting trip. Budget would be useful.

Depending on your budget, if you're looking for somewhere cheap and cheerful, you should stay at the Buchanan St Galleries Premier Inn.

It's a lovely fairly newish hotel in a FAB location for everything inc food, shops, entertainment, the station etc. And it's cost effective.

Grin Yes, ahem, approximate area would be better?!

Don't want a hostel but not mega bucks either - say between £50 - £100 a night? Open to suggestions, but not having time to walk miles was my main concern.

You shouldn't have too. Unless it's changed since I lived there the Underground is very reliable and there is a station a short walk from the main university campus with several stations in the city centre. Plenty of buses too and the distance from the city centre to the uni is short enough to make taxis viable even if on a budget. I think you need to decide whether to base yourself in the city centre or the west end near the uni, but either will be fine.

That's reassuring to know, thank you TooTrue Living in rural France for years I'm kind of out of the habit of cities/undergrounds etc! Grin

The Kelvingrove Hotel or the Argyll Western

Check out premier inn or holiday inn express in city centre

dancemom · 01/08/2018 14:38

City centre relatively small and public transport excellent so any Premier Inn type place in the city centre would be suitable

shellyandlayla · 01/08/2018 14:47

Excellent! Thank you.

It’s pribably easier for you to get bus direct from airport to city centre rather than having to go into Edinburgh city centre to get the train.

Sohardtochooseausername · 05/08/2018 22:05

You could air bnb if you want to see what it’s like living in the west end of Glasgow (pretty amazing actually, I lived there for almost 10 years and loved it.)

Redtartanshoes · 05/08/2018 22:06

Also if you fancied something a bit different, good deals to be had on Citizen M, grasshopper, the Z hotel and hotel indigo, all of which are fantastic and city centre

Finlaggan · 05/08/2018 22:13

You would probably be best to stay in the city centre and take the underground to the university.
Hillhead is the nearest stop.

Glasgow is a small city and very walkable it has a good bus service and the underground is great. Very efficient way to get around.

Finlaggan · 05/08/2018 22:17

Somewhere like the Frasers Suites in the Merchant City might suit, right in the middle of the city and a short walk to the underground.

City centre at night at the weekend might be an eye opener for you though!

MrsJayy · 05/08/2018 22:25

If my Dds are staying over night in Glasgow they usually stay at Citizen M

Gosh, just seen all these extra replies and advice. Thanks! Redtartanshoes thanks for the advice about buses from the airport - I'll look into that now. Plenty of great suggestions for places to stay, I'm getting excited already. Thank you again everyone.
