Where to holiday with a 6yo but NOT by the coast?

Where can DH, DS5 and I go on holiday that's not on the coast?

Needs to be stuff to entertain 6yo but be somewhere pretty! I'm not a fan of Center Parcs.

I just feel like a change from the usual seaside.

If you're a family who like sports and/or crafts, this place may suit:

I haven't been, but have a friend with 2 DCs who has been back several times.

Also agree with Shropshire. Ironbridge Museums are great for that age, and there is lots of lovely walking - The Long Mynd, etc.
The Lake District is just beautiful for walking, and lots of water sports or just boat trips.
North Wales is just beautiful. Lots of walking, then loads of castles to visit - which are usually popular with dc of this age.

Just out of interest..... what have you got against the seaside ?

We were in Derbyshire the last two years. So much for kids to do.

North York Moors? Pretty villages, good cycling, nature, outdoor activities

Peak District, base yourself in Castleton, Hope or Hathersage, then climb small mountains (Win Hill, Lose Hill), explore caves i and the castle in Castleton, hire bikes and ride along the Monsal and Manifold trails or around Derwent reservoir, heated outdoor pool in Hathersage, indoor pool in Buxton, shops to potter in Bakewell, massive fry ups in Grindleford, scrambly walks at Surprise View, and Padley Gorge.... and Sheffield at your disposal if it tips it down!

Go to HF!! There are hotels in most of the lovely places others have mentioned.

Lizsmum · 16/07/2018 22:47

We've done several HF holidays and also stayed at the Manor House hotel in Okehampton. I'd thoroughly recommend both of them . HF is great if you want to be sociable with other children and their families, Manor House is more about being a family unit.

I really love the idea of the HF holidays. DH is antisocial but DS and I would love it.

I was checking prices though, do you know if the price that comes up is per person or for the whole stay?

I just read it properly and see it's per person

If you’re walkers then the Lake District would be fab. Plenty of low level walks for a 6yo. National trust places. Boat rides on the Lakes. Will be heaving in the summer though!

glitterbiscuits · 17/07/2018 07:47

posh I thought we would hate the social side of it too but it worked out really well. And there are always plenty of cosy little lounges to slope off and have a read and a drink. Everything is optional and it's not all forced country dancing!

Around the yorkshire dales, Ripon is a good base. I used to live there and have 3 active boys. There is Brimham rocks, stockheld park, forbidden corner, yorkshire wildlife park, bolton abbey, fountains abbey, the dales, york. We rented a cottage in may half term for £500 for a week and could have easily filled 2 weeks with day trips, there is so much to do and for all ages.

Always think where I live is a great place for family holidays and quite unknown. I live near wyre forest in Worcestershire. They have lots of cabin in woods places as well as usual holiday cottages or caravans etc. Within 5 miles you have all the information beautiful forest walks, plus go ape, bike hire etc. Then there's the steam train from Kidderminster to Bridgnorth, the safari park. Birmingham short train ride if you wanted sea life centre or museums for a day.

Don't know where information came from. Daft phone 📱!

SinceWhenDid · 17/07/2018 08:01

I second Aviemore. It has everything you mentioned and loads more. Even does have a beach if you want one at Loch Morlich 😊

Groovee · 17/07/2018 21:22

Beverley in East Roding of Yorkshire has lots of walks and cycle routes.

SpreadingChestnutTree · 17/07/2018 21:31

Loads to do in and around Sherwood Forest. This place is good - smaller, quieter and cheaper than Center Parcs: www.sherwoodcastle.co.uk/
