Hi, looking for somewhere nice to visit within about 45mins/1hr drive from East Midlands airport. Nice hotels or a nice area to visit. looking for a relaxed break. Not been to the area before so no idea where is best to go. any recommendations?

What is your budget?

MazeCrystals · 09/07/2018 23:33

oh good question. I'd like to keep it under £120/£130 a night but could potentially stretch a little bit further for the right place

EMA is very close to the Peak District and the M1 so loads of places within easy reach. York is less than 2 hours away as well.

I used to live near here. My recommendations would be;

Calke Park - a beautiful National Trust estate very close by with a great house, cafes, walking etc - the house is very interesting as it's been left as it was and has some lovely collections in there too. It's just lovely here and quickly becomes a favourite of people who visit.

Staunton Harold - close to Calke Park. Nice for a potter. Courtyard with cafes and little shops. Lake and walks from there if you are so inclined (you can link up to Calke Park if you want to.)

Melbourne. Pretty little village with a lake and tea room (less to do here though.)

The Peak District is realistically over an hour away but is so, so beautiful. You would be spoilt for choice there. Avoid Dovedale if you don't like crowds of tourists but loads of gorgeous villages and places to visit.

If you have children then Foremark Resevoir has a great play area next to it and a cafe.

Accommodation wise - there's a very nice bed and breakfast at www.breedonhall.co.uk which is very close to EMA. We have stayed here. Lovely room and delicious breakfast (although it is in their big kitchen with the owners so if that's not your thing then maybe not.)

Otherwise I only know Premier Inn at Ashby de la Zouch. You know what you are getting there I suppose! There is a castle at Ashby which you can walk around (it's not that well preserved but you can climb the tower and look out.) Might be English Heritage?

Have a nice weekend whatever you decide to do!

Oh, there is also cycling available at Hocks Lodge very near Ashby. It's quite new so not all that scenic in terms of maturity yet but not too expensive and nice if you just want something different to do for an hour.

You could head to Warwick area (1hr drive from EMA) and do Warwick Castle, Stratford-upon-Avon, Kenilworth Castle etc.

No specific hotel recommendations.

Or second pp about Peak District/Chatsworth etc.

India1819 · 10/07/2018 06:22

So much to do around the east midlands:
Chatsworth estate / House / gardens / Bakewell
Matlock / Matlock Bath / Farm Park
Rufford abbey
Sherwood Forest / Sherwood pines
Clumber Park
Newstead abbey
Twycross zoo
Eden hall spa
Nottingham castle / caves
Woollaton Park
Kelham hall
Gunthorpe lock
Warwick castle / Stratford Upon Avon

May I point out that the M1 at EMA is a horrific nightmare at the moment, so if you are planning on going too far out of your way, stick to going south along the A42 rather than the M1...and come back through the Donington junction rather than head to the M1...we have 5 major road/rail improvements going on and it would be wise to not stray too far from the airport if you are wanting flights back out again.

MazeCrystals · 10/07/2018 11:41

ah thank you tells i shall try to avoid it
