Nice beaches nearby would be Hope Cove and Blackpool sands.

It's years since I've been but a good way to kill a day used to be a combined bus boat and steam train trip. It took in Totnes, Dartmouth, Kingswear and Paignton.

Dartmouth used to have loads of great antique shops and all the other little towns nearby have their own distinct character. Totnes has a great organic food scene and Kingsbridge has a good market and old fashioned cinema. Boat trips are nice from there too.

I think there are loads of National Trust properties in the area too.

Get the ferry over to the steam train and this takes you right up the way to a nice beach and then you can train back later.

The castle is worth a visit, it's pretty interesting.

A river boat tour is fab and you get great views of the naval college.

Agatha Christie's house is also supposed to be worth a visit but I haven't actually been there.

Enjoy, Dartmouth is lovely.

The castle is very fun. Good views from the coast path if you carry on from behind the castle too.
Riverford farm shop (just been rebranded something else and I can't remember the name but it's run by riverford) is on the road between Totnes and Buckfastleigh and has a nice cafe.
The river dart country park just outside Ashburton ok the edge of the moor is great too.
Totnes is great, j think you can get a boat from Dartmouth.
Bigbury beach is one of my favourite places on the planet, there's a good pub on the island too if you can get across.
sigh i miss Devon!

Agatha Christie's house is also supposed to be worth a visit but I haven't actually been there.

Yes it is and you can combine it with a boat trip, in fact I think you can arrive by boat.

I was there last week. It's my favourite place. Definitely do the round robin with the river trip and train. The Seven Stars in Totnes do the most amazing breakfasts.

Greenway, Agatha Christie's house, is fab and definitely worth a visit. But my most favourite National Trust house ever is also nearby - Colleton Fishacre. The house is lovely and the gardens are beautiful. Plus they serve excellent scones!

MyGuideJools · 03/07/2018 22:53

oooh can't go to Devon and not have a scone or three

Agree re Agatha Christine's house, arrive by steam train then get a boat over to the Ferry Boat Inn at Dittisham for lunch then boat and train back again.

If you like scones, Cockington Village is lovely and has a tea room called Weavers that does a great cream tea!

Wimbledonwomble · 04/07/2018 22:07

Oh and you must spend a day on Dartmoor - beautiful

Hi, I live very near Dartmouth and spend most weekends there!
Fab shops, parks, the castles great and a lovely walk song and around with amazing views. Boat trips, Blackpool sands is my fave beach and close by if you drive. Enjoy!

Well we are back from Dartmouth, we had 4 days there. It's a lovely little town.
We did the river cruise and the ferry and steam train ride. we got off at paignton which I wasn't impressed with atall, wish we had stopped the previous stop at the lovely sandy beach, never mind!
we went to salcombe which had a lovely little bay and amazing seafood restaurant, the 'winking prawn'Grin
The parks and harbour in Dartmouth are lovely, we walked all round there (couldnt believe the tiny little hospital!!)
Also had a lovely cream tea in a pub (can't remember the name now) the scones were amazing! Found a lovely fish and chip shop too.
So thanks everyone for your suggestions, they were a great help.
Now back on the diet!Confused.......
