I've booked a crazy cheap three night break for October half term for dh, myself and two dds 4 and 8. We're flying from Heathrow and have never been before. Has anyone got any family friendly/touristy ideas?

The transport museum and the tall ship (just behind the museum) are good for kids. Also nearby are Kelvingrove museum and Kelvingrove Park. What kind of things are you interested in?

Trip to Loch Lomond on the train, Science Center.

Groovee · 04/05/2018 17:15

Science Centre, Transport Museum would be my vote.

How far away is Loch Lomond?

The Scotland Street School Museum is free and very interesting. You can visit the different classrooms and kids can try on costumes and school uniforms that would have been worn a hundred years.
The Science Centre is a fantastic (and educational) full day out – including hundreds of interactive exhibits, a state-of-the-art Planetarium, IMAX cinema and spectacular live shows the kids will love.
The Glasgow Botanic Gardens are a lovely sanctuary in such a busy corner of the city. The playpark is fun and there is so much space for the kids to run free. The Botanics are the perfect place to let the kids let off steam without travelling too far or spending any money.

Go to Edinburgh for the day!

IHaveBrilloHair · 04/05/2018 18:09

Around 40 mins on the train from Queen Street, it's lovely and a total change of pace from the city.

user2929 · 05/05/2018 09:35

Thanks. We've been to Edinburgh already. We arrive about 9am Friday and leave 9am Monday morning so not a lot of time really but I'm sure we'll find lots to do. Science museum well definitely do. Thanks!

There are several food markets which are worth a visit - Platform GLA at the Arches, The Big Feed or Dockyard Social - if you fancy doing something different at meal time. The first one is the best IMO. They run Friday-Sunday I think.

I second suggestions for Kelvingrove, Transport Museum etc - Kelvingrove Park is lovely to walk round and the Hunterian museum at the Uni of Glasgow is also good.

Glasgow is compact enough that if your kids would enjoy it you could spend a bit of time in the city centre/shopping - there’s a Lego store in Buchanan Galleries and a Hamleys in St Enoch centre.

We got the tube quite a bit, which was enjoyable in itself for our kids, but if you’re close to London might not be! You could also get the bus out to the Burrell collection/Pollock park

Merchant Square for food.

Or hope on the subway to Kelvingrove and see the magnificent art gallery there.

Science Centre and/or Transport museum.

If you jump on a No77 bus (every ten minutes) to the Braehead Centre there’s an indoor ski slope where you can also go sledging. Pack wellies, gloves and a warm coat to do that. In fact google the ski place at Braehead as there are loads of activities there.

Pizza Punks if definitely the place to eat with kids. There's a kids menu but it's far more fun to make your own pizza from the adults menu. The list of toppings is endless and you can also choose your base and sauce. The pizza is wood-fired and always tastes delicious. You can have sweet pizzas for pudding or make your own ice cream sundae.

Hiya, in addition some of the ideas above - on our visit to Glasgow (which involved the sleeper coach from London!) we went to the Lighthouse exhibition and also to North Woodside public swimming pool - the oldest pool in Glasgow which is a lovely restored Victorian baths.
We really enjoyed Glasgow - hope you do too.

Loch Lomond is lovely but I wouldn’t go if you’re only there for 2 days, especially in October when it’s prob gonna be murky. So much to do in Glasgow for two days, transport museum and tall ship are great, as is Kelvingrove etc and all free. Science museum is great fun too tho can be a bit expensive. Nothing new to add really just reiterating PPs.

AgentProvocateur · 05/05/2018 10:26

Some good suggestions here, and I’d also go for Peoples Palace, a social history museum on Glasgow Green with a good play park beside it.

A pp suggested The Burrell in Pollok Park - unfortunately it’s closed for a few years as it’s being refurbished, but the park itself is worth a visit.
