Things to do near Padstow

We are going to stay just outside Padstow in the summer (late July/early August) for two weeks.

There will be me, DH and our 4 year old son.

Does anyone have any recommendations for places to visit/things to do around the area?

We will of course go to the beaches as DS loves that. I have also found a place called Lappa Land which looks good and DS will enjoy as he loves trains.

Should add, we are staying in a self catering cottage and have a coolbox so can take picnics out with us.

Tintagel is interesting- lots of, erm, colourful people and a ruin to walk to.

The minack theatre is an amazing experience if they have something child friendly on

snozzlemaid · 27/04/2018 18:20

Minack is a long long way from Padstow though.

You can hire bikes to cycle The camel trail. It's a lovely flat ride for most of it.

Camel creek adventure park is near there. I've not been there myself for some years but you could check it out online.
Lappa valley is good for kids who like trains. They also do steam train trips from Bodmin.

It'll be busy! I like the area around Port Quin. Some of the best beaches are ones that don't have car parks nearby, but where you have to walk ten minutes or so down from the road - that way you can get away from the crowds.

We are going in 2 weeks with 2 year old DS and 5 year old niece.

I’ve got Lappa valley on the list too!

Some other things we are hoping to do
Dairyland
Ferry to rock and a play on the beach with kites and buckets/spades
Crantock Beach and the boat to the tea shop
Trevaskis PYO & Farm - 45 mins away but hoping to find something to do in the way back
Flambards

Oh and Gardens if Heligan. I didn’t ‘get’ the Eden Project so giving that a miss this time

slippermaiden · 27/04/2018 21:40

We go every year, but hardcore camping and body boarding as much as we can. Usually go into Padstow for an afternoon, look round shops, do some crabbing and eat fish and chips. If it really rains we have been to Eden project, we all really love it there!

I really like the lobster hatchery in Padstow DH doesn't

Take the ferry from Padstow to Rock, grab something to eat at Rock, enjoy the view and get the ferry back again. Or walk through the sand dunes.

Yes to the camel trail. Perfect with young DC.

If the weathers not great I like the national maritime museum, but it's a bit of a drive, as is the Eden project.

Mostly I like the beach. You can't beat Watergate Bay on a sunny day, after grabbing lunch at Fifteen. Polzeath each is also great for bodyboarding.

I've never actually caught any crabs in Padstow...but caught loads in Looe last year.

If you are going in the sea please choose a lifeguarded beach and if just exploring check out tide times.

What sort of distance are you prepared to travel each day?

austenozzy · 27/04/2018 22:23

The inflatable water assault course at retallack resort is a good laugh for the family. Go on a warm day, though!

austenozzy · 27/04/2018 22:26

Sealife safari boat trips are good. Basking sharks are in the area now, and there have been lots of dolphins near me recently. (Falmouth, south coast).

Camel Trail. Get the ferry to Rock, coffee at the Blue Tomato and walk to Polzeath via the beach/coastal path. Wander round Port Isaac. Trip to Michael's Mount. Daymer Bay is great beach for little ones as much calmer than Polzeath (best ice cream at Polzeath though...) Day trip to St Ives for a wander/best crabbing.

InvisibleToEveryone · 06/05/2018 22:19

Healy's cyder farm, penhallow, bit of a drive, but it has animals and a nice restaurant.

Just up the lane, callestick ice cream farm.

Bude isn't far from Padstow and would be good for a day trip. A nice little town to wander around with 2 beaches and you can hire rowing boats or pedal boats on the river.
